| From California to New York, What Animals Can Teach Us about Spirituality is a hit with animal lovers and spiritual seekers. |
San Bernardino, CA. Maybe your life has gone to the dogs and you don't make any bones about it--but what about church bookstores? Across the country these speciality stores have discovered a new book that appeals to their congregates and has them panting down the spiritual path led by their beloved animal companions.
The book, What Animals Can Teach Us about Spirituality: Inspiring Lessons of Wild and Tame Creatures has sold almost 2,000 copies since it was released in November. To say it is the cat's meow wouldn't be acurrate--since it covers all animals.
Author Diana L. Guerrero is an animal behaviorist and consults nationwide. A spirtual seeker herself, she began her exploration of animal influences on humans after a serious fall from the top of a zoo hay barn.
Guerrero has been contacted by a variety of churches to conduct workshops and to attend as a guest speaker to share her "wild" insights. Not everyone is so receptive. Guerrero said, "I got a call from Salt Lake Tribune reporter Peggy Fletcher Stack. She had contacted zoos and found that they did not want to comment on the book. This is because scientists rely on empirical data and spirituality is not hard science--although zoo visitors would love it."
The book has a wide appeal because it does talk about wild and domestic animals. Guerrero explained, "The book is a collection of allegorical examples and a handbook of how to develop closer relationships with any creature. Readers will glean a better understanding of animals of all types and read about how animal inflences have helped others with personal and spiritual growth."
Guerrero trained in the USA and the UK and inquiries for help with animals come from around the world. Guerrero said, "I have an international column on animal behavior for zoo professionals and another on animal careers. The requests for help have come from some surprizing areas--even China and Russia."
Guerrero's life has only tamed down in the latter part of her career. She has worked with wildlife since the mid 1970's. This is Guerrero's first book for the general public. What Animals Can Teach Us about Spirituality: Inspiring Lessons From Wild and Tame Creatures is published by SkyLight Paths a division of Longhill Partners, Inc.
