FREDERICK, MD, USA -- May 3, 2008: Linda Alexander’s new book, Reluctant Witness: Robert Taylor, Hollywood, & Communism, the exhaustive biography of Golden Era movie star—and under-the-radar politician—hit the ground running and is going strong in its first sales weekend. Listed in “Today’s Top Books” for Friday, May 2,and Saturday, May 3, 2008, on Authors Den, http://www.authorsden.com , Ms. Alexander’s look into the vastly-misunderstood life of an early Hollywood pioneer tells not only the life story of “The Man With the Perfect Profile,” but outlines politics of the day and how the romance between Tinseltown and Washington, DC began in the 1930s . . . and shows why it’s still strong today.
Robert Taylor, an ultra-conservative, was active in local and national politics, with a keen eye on the international stage. In 1947, he led the Motion Picture Alliance for the Preservation of American Ideals. Like-minded insiders, most working for MGM, were determined to preserve their “American Way.” On their watch, Communism—the biggest threat of their time—would not infiltrate their country. On October 23, 1947, Taylor was subpoenaed in front of the HUAC in Washington, DC, the only movie star whose appearance was pre-announced to the media. The event was, in Taylor's words, a "circus." Alexander’s book reveals how he was originally officially classified a “Reluctant Witness” but through studio and government coordination, became the face to blame for the “Hollywood Ten’s” imprisonment and blacklisting.
Reluctant Witness: Robert Taylor, Hollywood, & Communism shows Taylor’s many facets—beginning as son of a strict Midwestern father and histrionic mother; meteoric rise as a movie heartthrob and longest-running studio contract player in film history; and a tumultuous personal life, including affairs with well-known women. Peace of mind finally came through his second marriage, to German model/actress Ursula Thiess, with whom he had two children, and supported her two children from a previous marriage.
Linda Alexander has written about Taylor since 1993. She was Featured, and Keynote, Speaker at Nebraska conferences in his name, and has written many articles. Years of entertainment interviews, with articles in Soap Opera Update, The Washington Times, Spotlight Magazine, regional publications like The Baton Rouge Advocate, and others, gives Ms. Alexander a strong background in listening—to the heart of a life story, and the essence of that life. Also the author of 2 novels and 2 other biographies, she has long-standing experience in bringing character—and characters—to life . . . and back to life.
