Skaine Examines Growth of Women's Hoops

"Skaine documents the changing landscape of the sport, from the first women's game played in 1893 through the change to five-player rules to the advent of Title IX legislation to the rise of the Final Four to the beginning of the WNBA.
She includes extensive profiles of the main characters, including Tennessee head coach Pat Summitt, retired Iowa women's athletic director Christine Grant and former Hawkeye head coach C. Vivian Stringer. Some of the men coaching in women's basketball, such as Tony DiCecco of Northern Iowa, are also featured.
In "Women College Basketball Coaches," Skaine paints a picture of a sport that's grown steadily, especially since the passage of Title IX and related legislation. She also writes that women's coaches are coming closer to their counterparts on the men's side in salary and financial resources.
On the other hand, said Skaine, work remains to be done. Take the issue of pay, she said."
