at the 2011 CNW/FFWA - WRITERS - EDITORS NETWORK INTERNATIONAL WRITING COMPETITION

As novice one, she pens, rewrites, refines
and shares with readers, news like Robert Byrd.
While subjects range from trains to vintage wines,

her wish to write in metered forms and lines
is finished draft to be the best when heard.
As novice one, she pens, rewrites, refines,

and writes a sonnet first in hopes it shines,
then searches facts to write as they occurred.
While subjects range from trains to vintage wines,

she finds a contest, enters work at times.
She trusts a judge will awe her every word.
As novice one, she pens, rewrites, refines.

She writes a masterpiece. Each point entwines
with skill, a noun a verb, concrete, un-slurred,
while subjects range from trains to vintage wines.

By mail, the judge rejects her lines. She pines
but vows her works’ defeat will soar as a bird.
As novice one, she pens, rewrites, refines
