Deylen Troika is the new Alpha of the Centruroides clan of scorpion shifters and the owner of a toxicology lab to appear legitimate amongst mortals. Forced to hire a new employee for his lab, Deylen has to go outside of his clan to find someone with the qualifications. He can't help but notice his new employee Seneca McLane is stunningly beautiful. If only her personality wasn't so abrasive. If only she wasn’t mortal…
Deylen uncovers a secret Seneca harbors, bringing them closer together, more closer than he would have imagined. It also puts his own secret in danger of being discovered.
When a rival clan challenges Deylen for the city, Seneca is caught up in to a world she knows nothing about. Can Deylen keep his clan affairs separate and protect her innocence or will she become an unwitting pawn in the fight for supremacy amongst the arachnid shifters?
Excerpt:
“Uh-oh, we’ve got company and they didn’t bring potluck dishes,” Clay Setliff warned.
Deylen glanced over at his clan-mate. “How many are there?”
“At least three trucks full. Probably about 10-15, I’d estimate.”
“Stop estimating and do an accurate count.”
As Clay left, Deylen stood and stretched. His back popped several times. He knew this day would come. In truth he was surprised that they had waited six months.
There were hierarchies within each type of shifter clan. Whether it was werewolves, werecats or werearachnids such as Deylen, they adhered to their own sense of law and order. Clans were dominated by Alphas and rules were established. It helped keep the peace for the most part but the close bond with their animal nature often proved to be insurmountable. Various shifters resorted to their primal instincts from time to time and the battle for territory and dominance amongst fellow creatures waged on.
Since his father’s death merely six months ago, Deylen was now the Alpha of the Centruroides Clan. He had wanted to wait some years and mate first before he challenged his father for the position but fate had other plans.
Now he assumed he was about to receive his first challenge. It was not unusual for a new Alpha to be tested to prove worthy of leading the clan. Sometimes the challenges were not tests but instead attempts at overthrow. The other main arachnid clan in this area was not friendly. The Loxosceles were led by a vicious fighter named Koda Webb. To call him a fighter was no understatement. Koda made his way around the Mixed Martial Arts circuit and had gained a reputation as a man not to be trifled with. He had ended several fighters’ careers and taken pride in that each time. Some venues would not even allow him to fight there because they knew someone would get hurt.
Deylen did not know for certain who was coming up the drive to pay him a visit but if he were to place a wager on it, his money would go on Koda Webb. He had not yet met the man face-to-face but he heard plenty about his rival.
He went downstairs to greet the uninvited guests. As he stepped out of his house that doubled as clan headquarters, he saw the towering frame of Koda getting out of one of the trucks.
Koda Webb was a massive Native American man. Standing 6’6” tall, he dwarfed most people around him. His body was muscular and well-defined. His physical training as a MMA fighter kept him in top form. His long, jet-black hair whipped in the wind as he stormed toward Deylen, Loxosceles clan members in tow.
“I demand retribution!” Koda bellowed before Deylen could even speak a word of greeting.
