Title: Sardinian Silver
Author: A. Colin Wright
Ah, youth! A time when young men (and young women too) struggled to find the difference, if there is any, between love and lust.
Sardinian Silver, a local Sardinian wine and the title of this book, is described by one character as, “More like a fleeting memory of something beautiful.”
This one sentence best describes the viewpoint of the main character, Arthur Fraser, a young Englishman in the story who as an older man reminisces about his year of work as a representative for a tourist company on the island of Sardinia.
Arthur quickly falls in love with the island off the coast of Italy and just as quickly begins his search for a “relationship” with a Sard girl. His quest is difficult from the start because the story takes place in the Sardinia of 1960, a time when strict Italian Catholic morality holds sway, especially for young girls.
When Arthur thinks he has found the love of his life, things soon become complicated when his Sard girl declares she may have fallen out of love with him and may now be falling in love with his best male Sard friend.
The writing is clear and concise, and while fiction, often has the feel of a memoir. Sexual encounters are tastefully handled, sometimes comically so, largely because of the youthful romantic idealism of the characters.
As an added bonus, the story often reads like a travelogue and you may find yourself searching the Internet as I did to learn more about this island in the sun.
Reviewer: Peter Klein Allbooks Reviews.
I can highly recommend this book, especially for those who enjoy romantic tales of the young.
