Eugene L. Meyer Wins Top Award from Regional Magazine Association:

9/28/2010 4:13:00 PM

by Eugene L. Meyer

Journalist Eugene L. Meyer has won the top Gold prize in the culture category from the International Regional Magazine Association. The prize was awarded for a feature on curling in the Maryland D.C. suburbs that appeared in the January-February 2009 issue of the bi-monthly magazine Maryland Life. The story focuses on a club that includes many curlers who are transplanted Canadians, coming from a country where curling is second only to ice hockey in popularity as a national sport.

This was Meyer's fourth award from IRMA for articles published in Maryland Life magazine, which has received a total of ten since it began publication six years ago. In awarding Meyer the Gold prize for the best culture feature, the judges commented as follows:

· "The author’s writing made this otherwise “obscure” topic entertaining. Ienjoyed reading about the people involved in the sport and wouldn’thave minded if it had been just a tad longer."  [Alice Liao]

· "Great quotes in this short piece, which does delve into the curling“culture.” [Bruce Itule]

· "Entertaining writing style kept my interest throughout." [Carol Cole-Frowe]

Meyer has now won eight writing awards from various associations since leaving the Washington Post in January 2004 following a long career there as both a reporter and editor.
