Update on my wife, friend and Authors'Den poet Sue Bergeron

After some encouraging days, a setback

Unfortunately, Sue seems to have suffered a setback. Her last two days were very good, and she was progressing with her physical and occupational therapy. A tentative date to return home had been set for next Friday, November 18.

Today, when I visited her, she was not feeling well. She was nauseous and was having pain in the kidneys. Her doctor had decided she was dehydrated, and aside from drinking lots of fluids, ordered a saline IV. Unfortunately, Sue has small veins, and they were having trouble finding one. They were going to take her to implant an IV that would stay for the duration of her stay, but upon examining her most recent bloodwork, they decided her platelet count was too low, and that would not be safe. They had stopped the antibiotic they were giving her for her urinary tract infection because it was stressing her kidneys too much. A different one had been ordered, but as of the end of visiting hours tonight it had not been administered. They did, however, manage to find a vein, and as of tonight had started in with a saline infusion. She is getting Tylenol for pain and discomfort.

The doctors have still not been able to come up with a diagnosis. They don't know if her kidney problems are causing or are caused by her anemia, and vice versa, and what effect the urinary tract infection is having on everything. What I do know is that they gave her two units of blood for her anemia when she entered the hospital last Wednesday. They gave her two more units of blood early this week, and a unit of IV albumin this Wednesday before she went up to rehab. The blood peps her up for a few days, it seems, and the anemia returns. They want to do a bone marrow biopsy as a diagnostic, but at the moment because of her lung problems Sue can't lie flat or on her side, which apparently is necessary for the procedure.

I am unsure if her discharge date of 11/18 will hold up. I would very much like some kind of concrete diagnosis before she is discharged, and would like at least to see the anemia and the infection come under some kind of control. I don't believe that discharging her only to have to bring hr back to the hospital within a few days would be in her best interest. A hospital bed hs been ordered for her and it will be set up in the living room when she returns. So as of now, things are up in the air.
