GIRLS, GIRLS, GIRLS! IS THE HBO SERIES ‘GIRLS’ FOR DUDES TOO?
HBO has done it again! After a few “misses” in the series area they have delivered another success in the form of ‘Girls’, a half-hour dramedy that follows a group of girls around the streets of New York City, specifically Brooklyn. Is this show for everyone? Definitely not, but is it a show guys can watch? Luckily I am here to take a bullet for you…here’s what I found.
There was a lot of buzz around this show. I was initially skeptical because this was a show centered on four women, one is a writer (or blogger), a slut, a prude, and the “I’m stuck in a relationship I don’t know how to get out of” girl. We’ve seen (or if lucky only heard) of this show, it was called “Sex and The City” and it lasted for three seasons too long. After watching the first episode I realized this was definitely NOT its predecessor. This show is much darker, not in a good or bad way, just much darker.
Given the abundance of promotion received, it was given that this show would receive its fair share of criticism. Strange to me was where the critics focused, not on the content, but rather lack of minorities. I mean, this is supposed to be Williamsburg, Brooklyn if we’re going to get picky, then it’s the lack of guys in beards we should be calling out. I mean you can’t look any direction without seeing groups of bearded men discussing the name of their new band.
