Nothing I can say here will be as interesting as my books. I have lived virtually everything described in them, except for the spirit rituals in Brazil. Those are kind of hairy, and while my husband and I lived there we never once considered attending one session. They are usually set in dangerous locations and perilous to blatant newcomers. I researched those rituals in Portuguese. Although I know a lot of spells to cast, I haven't dared use any of them to persuade an editor to buy. Newsletter Dated: 9/6/2005 2:25:11 PMSubject: Three Nuns I did tell you about an expected visit from a Loretto nun (a teaching order) didn't I? The one who said The Year of the Rat, set in Shanghai, blew her away and she wanted to know how many of the events in it actually happened.
I had the time of my life yesterday. Sister Patricia put a tape recorder on the table, and for two hours she asked and I talked. The other two were Sisters Claudette and Kathleen. Sister Claudette was wearing shorts!!! And I'd been worried about the batik nude over my fireplace. I told them that I'd contemplated placing a sheet over it, to their amusement. How times have changed. They weren't sure at first whether they should introduce Claudette as a nun because of the shorts. When they left Sister Patricia said I must called her PJ (for Patricia Jean) and I said I would have to work up to it.
They are holding a luncheon for Loretto alumnae from Shanghai at Sister Kathleen's house in Danville, a few miles farther east of Oakland, on Sept. 12th, but Sister Pat wanted to see me first.
They are going to look up my website and buy the other books. PJ (ulp) gave me her book about the Loretto nuns in New Mexico. Her book on the China Loretto nuns will have extensive quotes from me, I imagine. Her first book was accepted by a traditional pub. in 1963 but then she hit the wall that I have myself. She knows all about the tough trade. She said the pubs. seem to want assurance they can sell 50,000 copies before they will bite.
