====================================================== Welcome back to this issue of The G - Spot!
Hope you’re all enjoying a wonderful New Year so far and haven’t given up on those New Year’s resolutions just yet.
MOVIES/CABLE/DVDs:
ALIEN VS PREDATOR: REQUIEM: The character development is nowhere near as good as in the first AVP, though the performances are serviceable inasmuch as the humans in the story are simply around to be fodder for the Aliens and Predator during the invasion of a Colorado town. But for fan boys (and girls like me) this is an enjoyable scifi outing with just the right amount of action and special effects to make this an entertaining entry in the franchise.
AWAKE: I’m a big Hayden Christensen fan, and this movie was a perfect vehicle to show off the sensitive side of this talented actor that I appreciated from his LOVE IS A HOUSE performance. In AWAKE, Hayden’s Clay Beresford is a wealthy young man who has taken over the reins of his father’s company and runs it successfully. He is in love with and wants to marry his mother’s assistant, Sam Lockwood (Jessica Alba), but keeps his relationship with her a secret for fear of his mother’s disapproval. Sam’s mother, Lilith (Lena Olin) at first appears like the typical evil mother - in - law type who believes that no young woman is good enough for her only son, but there is a lot more to her than meets the eye. This was a nicely acted, tightly - plotted popcorn movie with just the right paranormal twist to quench my appetite for the genre. I enjoyed this one. CLOVERFIELD: I usually don't like to follow reviews, especially once I've already made up my mind to see a movie, but there was one particular element that consistently gave me pause—the single, handheld video shooting of CLOVERFIELD. I thought, BLAIR WITCH PROJECT, which I did NOT like at all and never understood the big fascination when it was released. Much to my surprise, CLOVERFIELD has a lot more going for it than BWP, the main things being a coherent plot and sympathy for the main characters.
The movie starts off innocuously enough with one of our lead characters, Rob, video taping his girlfriend in bed on an early morning in April. Jump forward to a month in May when we meet several of Rob's friends and his brother Jason who are planning a surprise going - away party for Rob who is on his way to Japan and a new job as a VP with some company.
Jason's girlfriend Lily sticks him with the onerous duty of videotaping farewell testimonials for Rob to take with him to Japan. Jason, in turn sticks his friend Hudson with the duty, thus, making Hudson the dutiful and intrepid cameraman for posterity when all hell breaks loose in Manhattan.
For New Yorkers, and especially those who were in lower Manhattan during the 911 attacks (and even for those who were not) this movie hits close to home with panicked pedestrians running from blinding dust clouds and towering monuments going up in blazes and smoke.
This movie had several positives, mainly its brevity; Hudson's humorous and anxiety - filled running commentary; and the fact that every frame immediately after the initial attack is filled with non - stop action, tension, emotion and mystery that has the moviegoer constantly pulling for the characters onscreen.
There were some genuine edge - of - your - seat, scary moments after the city falls under attack until the ironic and vague ending that made this movie worth seeing. The handheld, single - camera action was a definite asset rather than minus, and translated into an overall creepy and claustrophobic effect dragging the viewer into the main characters' meandering, life - and - death flight from danger.
As for the thing that attacks the city? Like the ending itself, it's totally up to viewer interpretation and I wouldn't want to ruin anyone's enjoyment by giving anymore than this away. Translation? Go see the movie.
I AM LEGEND: What holiday season would be complete without a blockbuster movie starring Will Smith? In this scifi suspense/thriller and remake he does not disappoint, at least not me. Smith’s Dr. Neville might possibly be the last survivor on earth after a deadly virus kills most of the world’s population and leaves the rest irrevocably infected. Neville, a scientist with the military, spends every waking hour working on a cure for the deadly disease while sending out messages to the world at large, searching for any other survivors other than the Darkseekers he spends his nights evading. In my opinion, this was a great movie (but of course I’m biased…have I mentioned I’m a big Will Smith fan?). This one had the trademark, great special effects (the infected are hideous, fast and overwhelming), great action, great story, poignant performances. A real winner!
LITTLE CHILDREN: Starring Kate Winslet this was an unexpected treat, though I’m still having a problem trying to figure out how the title relates to the movie. Kate is Sarah Pierce, an unhappy housewife and mother who falls for stay - at - home - dad, Brad Adamson (Patrick Wilson) or whom the other housewives and mothers who hang out at the park with their children have dubbed “The Prom King.” When Sarah takes up a bet with one of the other housewives/mothers to get Brad’s number, she goes one step further and gives him a kiss on the playground in plain view of the other mothers and their children and causing an instant scandal. Running concurrently with this main storyline is that of Ronnie (Oscar nominee Jackie Earle Haley) the convicted exhibitionist and pedophile in the neighborhood who lives with his older and protective mother, and a police officer suspended from the force bent on putting Ronnie away, or at the very least keeping him away from the neighborhood kids. This was a thought - provoking movie with interesting insight into the workings of married life and human frailty, and one I thoroughly enjoyed.
MUSIC AND LYRICS: Hugh Grant plays Alex Fletcher, a washed - up 80’s pop icon who makes his living now doing the amusement park and fair circuit. When Cora Corman, the hottest teen pop idol since Britney Spears contacts his manager with the idea to have Alex write a song for her new direction, things start looking up for Alex…until he finds out he only has three days to come up with a song to grab the pop queen’s attention. Big problem for Alex is that he isn’t that talented a lyricist. His specialty is writing beautiful and catchy melodies. Enter Sophie Fisher (Drew Barrymore) as a neurotic friend of a friend who comes in to water Alex’s plants. Turns out, however, that Sophie is a naturally gifted lyricist and when Alex finds this out he talks her into working with him to make one dynamite romantic song. This rom - com had numerous laugh - out loud moments (Sophie’s sister Rhonda played by the irrepressible Kristen Johnston, was a real hoot) Hugh and Drew had the best sort of chemistry and comedic timing. I really enjoyed this movie and can see Hugh and Drew making lots more sweet music together in more movies.
P2: This one could have been your typical psycho - on - the - loose/woman - in - jeopardy movies but for the smart performances of the leads, new - to - me actress Rachel Nichols and Wes Bentley (of the intense and dreamy eyes), each the driving force behind this better - than - average plot. Bentley stars as Thomas a lonely and troubled security guard in the office building where Angela Bridges (Nichols) works. We find out how really troubled and lonely Thomas is on Christmas Eve when he abducts Angela and holds her captive to spend Christmas Eve with him. To say that Thomas is obsessed with her would be an understatement, and he proves that he will do anything, including murdering the innocent and not - so - innocent, to keep her with him. This was a decent suspense/thriller, entertaining and enjoyable.
THE MIST: I haven’t read a Stephen King book or seen a movie based on same in a long time and after seeing this movie it made me realize what I’ve been missing and made me want to run out and pick up an SK book again. Like most SK stories, this one starts innocuously and simply enough, when a freak storm one night strikes a town a la Anyplace USA. Artist, husband and father David Drayton (Thomas Jayne) takes his son into town for supplies the next day. The real horror begins when they are swept into a supernatural incident and trapped in the town supermarket with an eclectic and easily - recognizable group of townspeople. A trademark and multi - leveled plot highlights this movie along with the usual compellingly flawed, universal and sympathetic suspects. This was a great movie with enough drama, tension, suspense and horrific moments of self - sacrifice and violent death to fill several horror movies. The ironic ending is both poignant yet wholly suitable to the story and characters.
ON THE WRITING FRONT: I’ve begun work on my first ménage trois story (TAMING DONNA: The Matchmaker 5) and am looking forward to seeing how it turns out as much as my characters are .
THE WOLF IN THE MANSION enjoyed a very nice run at Siren in the number one spot and/or in the top five for two months after its release. I’m hoping it continues to prove popular with paranormal and adult fable readers. So far so good.
INGENUE’S CHOICE: Zara’s Bois 2 was released on New Year’s Eve and enjoyed a nice run in the top six. As always, hope you enjoy this issue of The G - Spot! ======================================================

URBAN REVIEWS INTERVIEW:
URBAN REVIEWS: Tell us about Beneath The Surface.
GRACIE C. McKEEVER: BENEATH THE SURFACE is the first book in my The Matchmaker series. It is an erotic romance in the typical boy - meets - girl vein except for the elevated sensuality level and some paranormal twists and modern - day, controversial hot - button issues like suicide and same - sex relationships added for spice and realism. EJ and Tabitha (the hero and heroine) each come to the story with emotional baggage, EJ’s being his inherited psychic abilities and the loss of a past lover by her own hand. Tabitha has a bipolar, chemically - dependent mother and a father who left her to the foster system when she was eight, so she’s dealing with some abandonment issues of her own. Both find something in one another that the other needs, but coming to terms with their own internal conflicts and past relationships makes things difficult. But for EJ’s persistence and the guiding hand of his matchmaking psychic older sister, EJ and Tabitha would never work….To read the complete interview visit here: http://www.urban - reviews.com/insideout - graciecmckeever.html
APEX REVIEWS INTERVIEWS: Official Apex Reviews Interview: Gracie McKeever (In Plain Sight)
AR: Gracie, thanks for joining us for this interview. We truly appreciate having this opportunity to learn more about your book.
GM: It's great to be here and I'm happy to share information about In Plain Sight!
AR: Where did you get the idea for such a unique, intriguing story?
GM: Several elements were at work that brought the premise for In Plain Sight to fruition, one of the more important ones being my interest in the paranormal, specifically as it relates to the afterlife and the possibility of reincarnation. Reincarnation presents a perfect opportunity for [my] characters to complete business that they were not able to complete during their lives. Also, I love dealing with family relationships—the dynamics of siblings, but especially the dynamics between identical twins has always fascinated me...To read the complete interview, visit here: http://blog.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=blog.view&friendID=207655645&blogID=337466699
Official Apex Reviews Interview: Gracie McKeever (Between Darkness And Daylight, Sisters Of Emsharra)
AR: Thanks for joining us for this interview, Gracie. We're looking very much forward to learning more about your books.
GM: Thanks for having me! I'm honored and thrilled to be here and talk about my books.
AR: We've reviewed your previous works, and we've always found them imaginative and unique. Where does your creativity stem from?
GM: I'm glad you've found my work imaginative and unique, as that's what I strive for in all of my writing. As to where my creativity stems from, that can be from anywhere and everywhere—a piece of conversation overheard in a restaurant or movie theater, a quote or unique name that I want to build a character around, television (who says it's a wasteland?), movies and other books that I've enjoyed. Most of all my creativity stems from a curious nature and an innate need to answer life's mysterious "What if's?"... DETAILS OF THE HUNT : OUT THERE IN THE NIGHT by Laura Baumbach: In DOTH Talos of Menalon is still grieving the loss of his younger brother Backus to a target. He blames himself for not fully preparing the youth to the dangers of the hunt. Various council members and Talos’ brother Zeban want to pull him out of his depression and tap him for a bounty hunting mission that will take him to 17th century Earth where he is to acquire the pirate Aidan Maymon. Aidan is the young, spirited captain of the Jamaican Maiden and has just had his command usurped by several mutinous crew members. When Aidan is tied to a barrel and thrown overboard as shark bait, Talos is the one who pulls him from his watery grave and brings him back to his ship for transport back to his home world where he will turn Aidan over to the man who has placed the bounty on Aidan’s head. Talos, however, gets other ideas when he catches a whiff of the unconscious, wily pirate and wants to mate against all rules regarding the hunt. I previously read Baumbach’s contemporary m/m erotic romance ROUGHHOUSING and was impressed with her characterizations and story telling. In DOTH she shows that she is no less talented when it comes to creative world - building in a futuristic society inhabited by complex alien beings. Talos as the emotionally torn and dutiful bounty hunter is strong and sympathetic. Aidan is an irrepressible scoundrel who is Talos’ match in every way refusing to be anyone’s slave. The love scenes between these two are off - the - chart HOT and their repartee and humor is lol funny. Baumbach again shows us her versatility and range in OTITN when she pairs a century - old Native American skinwalker in Adam with modern - day doctor Connor Jacy who works at a clinic in the Keneai Peninsula of Alaska. Bitten by a wolf and turned into a skinwalker, Adam has been waiting for his true soul mate, one who has been marked by the moon with two spirits, for the last hundred years. Connor, restless and frustrated in his relationship with partner and gifted trauma surgeon Greg Pierce has recently been having visions of making love with a huge and sexy werewolf, but he’s frightened by what they mean. When a native woman hundreds of miles away goes into labor and Connor is called into action to deliver her baby, the truth about the werewolf in his dreams and his destiny will soon be revealed to him. This is another well - written, hot and sexy romp by Baumbach. These two titles are both available at http://www.loose - id.com
DEVIL MAY CRY : UPON THE MIDNIGHT CLEAR by Sherrilyn Kenyon: In DMC the usual suspects and cast of characters along with some new faces inhabits this irreverent and sizzling edition to the Dark Hunter series. In this one, Sin is a Sumerian god who has had most of his god powers stripped from him by the conniving and selfish Artemis. Not satisfied with this, Artemis sends Katra, her handmaiden, to the human world on a mission to kill Sin before he can come to Olympus to kill Artemis. Sin, in the meantime is occupied with trying to stop the devastating gallu demons from infecting humanity one bite at a time and releasing the even more destructive Dimme who want to obliterate mankind completely. Unexpected assistance comes to Sin in former enemy sent to kill him when Katra sees that he is not the conscienceless murderer and rapist Artemis has made him out to be. Surprising revelations and familiar favorites in Simi and Ash make this entry in the series a real treat, as does the sizzling relationship between Katra and Sin. In UTMC Aidan O'Connor is a famous and wildly successful actor driven into seclusion in an isolated cabin in the woods by some backstabbing and envious family members and friends, specifically his older brother Donnie. He is in such emotional pain at the betrayal that has been meted out upon him, he has even thought of suicide, but refuses to give his enemies the satisfaction.
Donnie is a bitter prison inmate who has just summoned the Greek god, Dolor from his stasis in order to reap revenge on the younger brother who has everything he feels he should have but is unwilling to work for. He is so bitter and blind with jealousy that he is willing to sacrifice his own blood to the god of pain in order to get retribution.
Enter Dream - Hunter Leta who has had her share of run - ins with Dolor, the least of which was when he murdered her beloved husband and daughter in front of her. Leta defeated the god once, placing a curse on him right before going into stasis herself to heal after their battle.
When Dolor re - emerges, Leta makes it her business to track down his target, determined to siphon Aidan's bitterness and pain and pool it with her own powers in order to defeat Dolor. But what she discovers in Aidan is more than a potential weapon against the Greek god, but an ally and kindred spirit.
This story has the trademark humor, sarcasm, non - stop action and inventive world - building of a Kenyon Dark Hunter/Dream Hunter story, but I can't help feeling that it is just filler and the author is saving her big guns for Acheron in August. Compared to the other books in this popular series, Upon The Midnight Clear is pretty average. Enjoyable, but average.
EYE OF THE BEHOLDER : MELTING ICE : MY FATHER’S LOVER : THE PRO by D.J. Manly: No, these are not books in a series and are not even remotely linked other than that they are all written by the same author and one of my new favorites. If you’re into m/m erotic romance with snappy dialogue, fast - paced action, passionate and erotic sex - scenes, well - rounded, engaging characters and intriguing story - lines, then this author and her books are for you: In EYE OF THE BEHOLDER Danny Verdi is the hottest thing on the runway and he knows it. He’s a model living the highlife, sleeping with his photographers and throwing caution to the wind as far as his career is concerned. Frank was at the top of his game as a high fashion model photographer when a chemical fire started by an obsessed, rejected lover, leaves him horribly disfigured. He has spent the last several years in seclusion in Italy, punishing himself for his past hubris. He knows Danny’s type because he’s been where Danny is now: young, beautiful and full of himself. Danny’s manager, Edward Haller thinks the two of them will make a perfect professional match, and they do until lust gets in the way. How Frank comes to terms with his guilt and Danny comes to terms with his selfishness and vanity to meet somewhere in between and bliss makes this a wonderful little love story with some hot sex throw in for good measure. In MELTING ICE we have young undercover detective Brian Fuller who is gay and in the closet. He’s the newbie in the gang squad and is mercilessly given the shit jobs until one day when his superior, Grant Maloney, comes onto him during a surveillance job and is consequently rebuffed by Brian. Fearing Brian will reveal his secret, Maloney sets him up and leaves him stranded in motorcycle gang territory. Brian is kidnapped and beaten and knows that he is going to die. How he survives and why makes for great reading and his growing relationship with gang leader Ice is both a revelatory and sexy tale. In MY FATHER’S LOVER a talented female impersonator and owner of Impressions is brutally murdered in a homophobic incident outside his club that sets off a series of events that will bring his estranged teenaged son and namesake Michael together with Anthony, the adopted son of Michael’s lover Daniel and the only son that Michael has ever known. When the younger Michael shows up for the funeral and reading of his father’s will, it is apparent to Anthony that he is a selfish and arrogant little snot only interested in the money and other material things that are coming to him as a result of his father’s death. Michael thinks Anthony is some young gigolo who wangled his way into his father’s good graces in order to obtain what rightfully belongs to Michael. How the pair reconcile their relationship with Michael’s father and each other is a sensitive and sexy tale of self - discovery and redemption that readers do not want to miss. In THE PRO, Lee Hastings is a high - priced male escort or what some of us would call a prostitute. He fell into the life as a teen when and older man took him off the street and under his wing. He doesn’t fully realize how truly empty his life is until driven and haunted homicide detective Zachary Freeman approaches him one day with an offer he can’t refuse: spy on his latest customer or go to jail. To say Zachary is haunted by demons of his own would be and understatement, and in Lee he recognizes a kindred spirit and not just someone he lusts after, though the chemistry and sexual tension between the two is sizzling. The dialogue in this one is particularly witty and sharp and the action is fast - paced and flowing. The above - mentioned 4 titles are available at http://www.loose - id.com but as this is a pretty prolific author with books available from several different publishers, you might want to check out her site at http://www.djmanly.com just to see what titles she has to offer.
LILY IN BLOOM by Morgan Ashbury: This was the one of the sweetest and hottest erotic romances I’ve ever read! Recently divorced and living on her own in a remote farm left to her by her uncle Mark, Lily is a beautiful and benevolent flower who’s been living in the shade of familial cruelty and disrespect most of her life. Only until an adult Ryan Kinkaid comes into her life sixteen years after their initial steamy encounter, does Lily start to bloom and earn the sort of fulfilling life and regard she deserves. A sexy, sensitive and intelligent younger man and a reserved but curious and sensual older woman make this May - December erotic romance a real winner! This book is available from http://www.sirenpublishing.com
ROUGH CANVAS by Joey W. Hill: This story continues Hill’s Nature of Desire series and features Marcus from her previous HOLDING THE CARDS with nostalgic appearances from Josh and Lauren, the h/h in HTC. But the spotlight in RC is all on Marcus Stanton and his soul mate Thomas Wilder as they try to reconcile their past lives separately and apart and come to terms with the dynamics between their families and each other. Marcus is the Dominant or Master in this relationship and Thomas, naïve North Carolina farm boy with a heart of gold and an awesome talent for painting erotic art is his submissive and slave. Everyone seems to understand that these two belong together—everyone except Marcus and Thomas. But when family tragedies and power struggles rear their ugly heads, Marcus and Thomas find comfort in each other’s arms and discover that they really are the Yin to the other’s Yang. Excellent story! The love scenes of bondage and domination are off - the - charts sizzling, emotionally draining but as always cathartic, and not for the weak of heart. This one’s available from http://www.ellorascave.com
THE BLACK DAGGER BROTHERHOOD SERIES by J.R. Ward: Okay, I’m hooked. I held out as long as I could and only just recently decided to break down and buy all the books in the Black Dagger Brotherhood series after hearing so much about it (usually I’ll buy the first in a series just to see how I like it, especially after not completely enjoying the first in L.A. Banks’ Vampire Huntress Legend series). This one didn’t disappoint and was exactly what I was looking for when I picked up MINION but didn’t get. First off, when all the wonderful world - building and dark vampire action - adventure storyline is said and done, this book is at its heart a romance. Second off, it can stand alone. Of course there are little tidbits and threads left open for the next books, but the main storyline, the main romance between hero and heroine concludes to this reader’s satisfaction. To read my full reviews of all the books in the series to this point—DARK LOVER, LOVER ETERNAL, LOVER AWAKENED, LOVER REVEALED and LOVER UNBOUND, check out my shelf at Shelfari http://www.shelfari.com/gwiz10 .
THE FORGETFUL SPY by Lara Santiago: It’s been a while since I’ve had the opportunity to read a book by one of my favorite authors and this read doesn’t disappoint. Colin the FBI agent gives Jake the fireman from Lara’s previous THE BLONDE BOMB TECH a run for his money in this erotic espionage romance. I’d like to be the meat in that sizzling civil servant sandwich (how’s that for alliteration?). This book had the trademark hot and creative sex scenes, multi - dimensional and engaging characters in Colin and Rachel/Laurie and action, suspense, and more action! It’s a definite fast - paced, tightly - wound story of betrayal, redemption and an impossible love match. But as anyone who’s ever read a Lara Santiago book knows—love always finds away. This is another winner from http://www.sirenpublishing.com

you lay beside her, a wrist thrown over your forehead as if you've suddenly caught a case of the vapors
and you moan
you close your eyes against erotic memories but the images pound your eyelids, relentless insistent aphrodisiac, reminding you of short - lived delight
and you sigh
thoughts of the other, your vagina dentata, who wears your band's sister, home in and you question, "What have I done?"
then you turn your body to the softness and warmth, curl into it, weave your arms through hers and caress full tender breasts
and you groan
you hold onto this one who has insinuated her ways and means into the fabric of your life with the tenacity of a bandit - eyed racoon jimmying open a garbage can, rummaging through the trash for sustenance and treasure

NEW REVIEWS (EXCERPTS):
BETWEEN DARKNESS AND DAYLIGHT:
"Between Darkness And Daylight is a sharp story with even sharper characters, sure to keep the reader on his/her toes. McKeever interweaves suspense, mystery, and romance throughout the tapestry of her narrative with impressive ease. Also, in recounting the visions experienced by both Nova and Zane, her skillful use of metaphor as an effective storytelling vehicle is reminiscent of Hitchcock in his heyday.
With its spicy plotline and timely twists, Between Darkness And Daylight is sure to add to McKeever's already considerable fan base. Highly recommended." 4 Stars, Josee Morgan for Apex Reviews. "Wow, Gracie McKeever wrote a fast - paced thriller with this one, I couldn't put [Between Darkness and Daylight] down. This type of romantic suspense is what draws me to this genre, someone that has visions. When over achiever Nova Foxx is in an accident that almost takes her life, she comes out of it with a new look on life, and a gift of inherent psychic abilities, where she sees a man in danger from a stalker. This story just built stronger and stronger to where I couldn't put it down for anything. Gracie is a very gifted writer that can turn a good book into a "Great" book. I look forward to reading more of Gracie McKeever's books in the future." IN PLAIN SIGHT
"...a richly rewarding read, with compelling characters you can't help becoming attached to - no matter how villainous they may be. McKeever displays sound literary judgment in revealing only as much of the storyline as needed in order to keep you turning page after page, in anxious anticipation of the story's continued development. The suspense is palpable, and the plot is filled with enough delicious twists to rival M. Night Shyamalan at his best.
You don't have to be a believer in God or the Heavens to be moved by this love story within a Love Story. McKeever's effervescence in crafting an engaging narrative of betrayal, vengeance, and ultimate redemption has many redeeming traits of its own, chief among them her ability to flat - out tell a great story. Highly recommended.” 4 Stars, Reviewed Josee Morgan for Apex Reviews. SISTERS OF EMSHARRA: Guardian Seductress, SOE 1/Predator’s Salvation, SOE 2:
"Whips, chains, and handcuffs...McKeever delivers another super sexy page - turner that keeps you intrigued, chapter after chapter. With a writing style that keeps you on your toes, in Sisters of Emsharra , McKeever illustrates women empowerment with a twist; Genesis and Lamia radiate superiority, and in a painfully erotic yet so delightful manner, show men who really wear the pants—leather pants, of course. Not for the faint at heart, McKeever explores the BDSM culture enhanced with magical surprises that made me wish I could rip off my clothes with the simple wave of a fist. Sharp, sassy, and a whirlwind of action and suspense, I was left craving more.” 4.5 Sistah Hugs, Tasha for Sistah Friend Book Club 12/07 http://www.sistahfriend.com/sistersofemsharrareview.htm
"For its unique appeal and pure imaginativeness, Sisters Of Emsharra shines as a well - crafted fantasy with enough verve and excitement to go around. McKeever continues to impress with compelling stories featuring strong characters that push the narrative along with aplomb. The world of erotic fantasy thrillers is certainly richer for having Sisters Of Emsharra as its latest standout addition." 4 Stars, Josee Morgan for Apex Reviews. SPELLS CAST IN SHADOWS:
"Miss McKeever has crafted a unique and intriguing world that seamlessly blends reality and fantasy, and she’s once again gifted her readers with a plot filled with well developed and fascinating characters. The book contains a little of everything that a reader might desire…intrigue, deceit, betrayal, murder, and love, all integrated into a fast paced and well plotted storyline. In many ways it’s a classic good versus evil tale encased within a modern day fairytale. And on top of all this, the relationship between our hero and heroine is intense, passionate and so fiery, that they nearly go up in flames. This is not the first book by this author that I’ve read and it definitely won’t be the last. She consistently crafts fascinating original stories that keep her readers enthralled from beginning to end. Her attention to details and her descriptions, make the world that she has constructed come alive." Pam, 4 Roses, My Book Cravings. This second book in her matchmaker series is filled with interesting, likeable and well rounded characters, coupled with a fast pace, witty dialogue, suspense, intrigue and blistering hot love scenes as the two main characters learn to trust and love each other. The story is filled with twists and turns that will keep you guessing as Nick strives to keep Slany safe from an intelligent and obsessed madman up until the very end. THE WOLF IN THE MANSION:
"...This is a quick - paced and suspenseful read that held me until the last word. The characters are believable and appealing. The combination of shapeshifters, witches and attempted murders keeps it interesting. The level of tension keeps you wanting more. Gracie McKeever knows how to keep the action tight, the love scenes steamy, and the dialogue intriguing. The scenes where psychic powers are being used, and the way she describes the action are a true highlight of the story. THE WOLF IN THE MANSION may be short in length, but it's strong on entertainment." Reviewed by Miranda Lee for PNR. THIS ISSUE’S NOVEL EXCERPT #1: “HER BEST MAN” by Jana Richards
Sarah nervously drummed her fingertips on the table. Her pathological dislike of being late meant she'd arrived at the Shangri La Lounge a full ten minutes before three. She took in her surroundings. Many of her fellow cruisers had stopped in for a leisurely drink on their way between activities. Most looked tanned and relaxed and ready for fun. Why couldn't she be like that? Music played in the background as a friendly waitress took her order. Sarah asked for a glass of white wine, not knowing what else to order. When she thought about it, she realized she hadn't been in a bar since her university days. She really was dull, she thought with a sigh. Sarah admitted to herself that she felt excited at the prospect of meeting Will this afternoon. While she'd sweated through the aerobics class and listened to the art lecture with Beatrice, and especially while she'd dodged Mr. Bad Toupee, she'd thought of Will and the fun activities he'd have in store for her. Just being around Will was fun. A stern voice in her head told her that the last thing she needed was a party boy in her life. She needed security and roots, while he craved foot - loose adventure. They had nothing in common. But even though she told herself this, she couldn't quash the excitement that trembled through her body when Will walked through the door. She waved to get his attention and he joined her at her table. A waitress approached for his order. "I'll have a scotch. Make it a double." He tapped his fingers impatiently, seeming on edge. "How did the writing go?" Sarah asked cautiously. "Lousy." He took a deep drink when the waitress returned with his scotch. "I've written myself into a corner and can't find my way out. Maybe I should just chuck the whole thing. What the hell, it only represents a year's work." He clinked his glass against hers and took another swallow. Sarah hated seeing him so hopeless and felt terrible for badgering him to write. "Can I read what you've written so far? I'm no expert, but I read a lot. Maybe I can suggest something." "We'll see," he said with a noncommittal shrug. The house lights suddenly dimmed and a spotlight formed a circle of light on a small stage set up in the corner of the lounge. A member of the lounge's staff stepped into the spotlight. "It's that time again, ladies and gentlemen. The Shangri - La Lounge presents karaoke happy hour, the most fun you can have in public in the middle of the afternoon. We've got prizes for the good, the bad and the just plain ugly karaoke performance, so step right up and tell us the name of the song you want to wow the audience with this afternoon." Sarah watched a couple of young women hurry to the stage, laughing as they went. How wonderful to be so free of inhibitions that you were willing to risk public embarrassment. Where did that kind of confidence come from? "I wish I could do that," she sighed. "Why can't you?" Sarah looked at him in surprise, not realizing she'd spoken her thoughts out loud. "I couldn't. I'd be too embarrassed." "Do you want to read my manuscript?" "Well sure, but - - " Will grinned at her. "I'll make you a deal. You can read it. On one condition." Sarah didn't like the gleam in his eye. "What's that?" "You can read my masterpiece if you get up and sing." "Sing?" The bottom fell out of Sarah's stomach. "What are you talking about?" He pointed to the stage. "You heard the man. It's karaoke time, Sarah. Just tell the guy over there that you want to sing and he'll set you up." Pure terror flowed through Sarah's veins. "I can't sing in front of people." Will shrugged. "Okay then, suit yourself. But if you expect me to bare my soul then you'd better be prepared to do likewise." "That's blackmail!" He leaned back in his chair and steepled his fingers, a devilish smile on his face. "Blackmail is such an ugly word. I prefer reciprocity. You do something for me, I do something for you. Of course, if you're chicken, or you have the voice of a chicken..." "I'll have you know I have a very nice voice," she whispered. "I would just rather keep it in the shower." "Fine. We'll never speak of it again." He picked up his drink and Sarah was relieved to end this ridiculous conversation. She sighed and sipped her own drink. Maybe if she'd been a different person, someone with a lot more chutzpah, she could climb that stage and not care about making a fool of herself. But she wasn't that person. "Cluck, cluck, cluck." At first Sarah couldn't identify the source of the chicken clucking sounds, but soon realized they were coming from Will. "Cluck, cluck, cluck." He added some chicken wing action by tucking his hand in his armpit and flapping his elbow. A little head bob completed the chicken pantomime. Sarah stared at him, full of indignation and embarrassment. "I am not chicken." He shrugged carelessly. "If the wing fits..." She got to her feet, and looked down her nose at him. "I was the soloist in the Lord Grey Elementary School choir. I love to sing." It was true, she did love to sing, but somewhere along the way she'd grown too shy and too self - conscious to sing in front of people. She'd learned to doubt her own ability. Well, nuts to that. "Over here," she said, waving at the young man with the clipboard. "You can put me down to sing." With that she walked on trembling legs to the karaoke stage. *** Will watched in astonishment as Sarah walked to the stage, her head held high. When he'd seen that the Shangri - La Lounge offered karaoke he'd suggested it as their meeting place, hoping he'd be able to gently convince Sarah to participate and have some fun. Instead he'd been too hard on her, lashing out because of his frustration with his writing. Maybe he blamed her for forcing him to face his inadequacies today. The manuscript wasn't working and he didn't have a clue how to make it better. But that didn't excuse bullying Sarah into doing something she obviously feared. He got to his feet, thinking he'd apologize to her and whisk her out of the bar. But before he could take two steps, the house lights went down and the spotlight on the stage lit up again. Reluctantly he resumed his seat, a sick feeling in his stomach. How could he be such a jerk? He cringed as Sarah showed the master of ceremonies the song she wanted. What if she sounded terrible? Sarah would be devastated if she embarrassed herself on stage. The swell of protectiveness that washed over Will surprised him. The master of ceremonies climbed the stairs to the stage once more. "Good afternoon. Welcome to the Shangri La Lounge and our karaoke happy hour. We've got our first act, ladies and gentlemen. All the way from Ottawa, Canada, and singing the Supremes hit "Can't Hurry Love", please welcome Miss Sarah Stevens." The familiar opening bars of the tune pumped out of the karaoke machine. Sarah stood absolutely still in the spotlight on the stage, hanging onto the microphone with both hands as if afraid it might run away from her. She sang the first few words, her voice an octave too high and so quiet Will barely caught the lyrics. "Come on, Sarah honey, you can do it," he murmured to himself, willing her to give it all she had, or at least not embarrass herself. He got to his feet, too nervous to sit, and found a spot close to the stage. Sarah saw him, and with a determined look on her face, fixed her gaze on him. Her voice became stronger, more sure of itself. Will mouthed the words along with Sarah and a tiny smile curved her lips. When he put his hand on his hips and shuffled his feet in his best attempt at a choreographed Supremes move, her smile grew wider. She blossomed right in front of him, her voice clear and strong, her face radiant and full of emotion. She was good, really good. Maybe it was all that choir singing in elementary school. Will's chest ached with pride and relief. His excitement mounted as her voice gained power. The song reached its climax, and Sarah's voice soared. The lyrics spoke of yearning for a love that never seems to come, that at times seems unattainable. But the song ended with hope. Wait. Be patient, and love will come to you. Something as wonderful as love can't be hurried or forced. Sarah's gaze never left his face. She sang to him as if they were alone in the room. For all he knew, they could have been. She was all he saw, all he heard. The longing in her voice and in the words of the song touched something in his heart, and for a moment he felt her soul had spoken to his. When the music stopped, the room erupted in applause, startling Will because he'd forgotten anyone else besides the beautiful woman on stage existed. Sarah stepped off the small stage and ran laughing into Will's arms. "Oh my God, Will, I did it. I actually did it!" Sarah threw her arms around his neck and hugged him enthusiastically. "I was so scared at first, but then I saw you there and I just pretended everyone else was in their underwear." Will laughed. "In their underwear?" Sarah pulled herself away to look in his face, her eyes shining with excitement. "Well, you know, they always tell you to imagine the audience sitting in their underwear so you're not so nervous. It actually works. Oh my God, Will. What a rush!" She threw her arms around him once more and Will held her tight, caught up in her excitement. "I'm really proud of you," he said. "You were terrific." "Thank you." She snuggled closer to him. Her slim body fit perfectly against his, as if she'd been made just for him. Her hair was silky against his cheek, its subtle flowery scent filling his senses. His body began to stir as he became acutely aware of Sarah as a beautiful, desirable woman. His reaction scared the hell out of him. Gently, he extricated himself from her arms and put a little distance between them. "Well, you lived up to your part of the bargain. I guess I have to live up to mine." He sobered. "I shouldn't have pushed you like that. It wasn't fair." Sarah's eyes were still shining. "I could have always walked out. I think a part of me really wanted to sing but was too scared. Thanks for giving me that extra push, because I would never have done that on my own." She laughed with delight. "Maybe I'm not the total wimp I thought I was." He gently tucked a stray lock of blonde hair behind her ear, his hand lingering on the sleek strands. "You're no wimp, kid. Trust me." Their gazes locked. Sarah's green eyes radiated excitement and enthusiasm and an innocent trust. Will turned away, needing to put some distance between them before he did something stupid, like kiss his brother's fiancée. THIS ISSUE’S NOVEL EXCERPT #2: “The Mighty Flynn” by Sierra Dafoe The Mighty Flynn by Sierra Dafoe http://www.sirenpublishing.com/sierradafoe/tmf.asp
Russ is everything a girl could ask for - - handsome, caring, and secure. If only he'd be a little more dominant in bed! Geena's on the verge of calling off the wedding until his best man, Flynn, shows Russ what the bonds of matrimony are really for...
EXCERPT
Geena stared in amazement. Beneath the blank face of her half - mask, her body shimmered in an iridescent green corset. Gleaming sequins traced the upward thrust of her breasts. Feathers tufted her shoulder - straps and the top of the false corset - Michelle had showed her the velcro up the back, allowing her to rip it off with one swift tug.
At the time, Geena had wondered nervously if she'd have the courage to do it. Now, though, drinking in the sight of her own reflection, she felt a growing heat unfold in her belly. She was staring at a stranger, an exotic and utterly erotic fantasy woman. Behind the sequined cat - face she was a cipher, all curved gleaming flesh, her personality erased by the expressionless mask.
She had never imagined she could look like this. She trailed her hands up her sides, acutely aware of her body in a way she'd never been before. Not her, Geena, not her thoughts or dreams or inhibitions. Just the warm, wanton, half - naked flesh, with its own dreams, its own desires...
No one would recognize her. She barely recognized herself.
Entranced with her image, she moved closer to the mirror. Slowly, wonderingly, she ran her hands over her body, caressing the dip of her waist, the rise of her ribcage, the full, rounded curves of her breasts. Her nipples tingled beneath the scratchy fabric, and Geena rubbed them lightly, feeling her body loosen and her movements becoming slower, smoother, and incredibly seductive. Placing her hands on the mirror, she arched her back, displaying her ass to the men behind her.
There was an erotic intensity in those watching eyes. The sensation carried with it a strange and wholly unexpected sense of power. She could feel them, all of them, sitting there beyond the lights, their gazes fixed on her. It was as if she were alone on the stage, the center of all that enrapt attention.
And she could do whatever she liked. She could tease them, taunt them, torment them as she wished. She could make them ache for her, make their cocks pulse torturously, make their heads spin and their balls swell painfully with unspent come.
Behind her mask, Geena smiled.
Turning, she strutted to the edge of the stage and stepped onto the runway. The sensation was even stronger here, with men surrounding her on all sides, their eyes glittering avidly in the semi - darkness, their gazes tracing her neck, her breasts, and the generous curves of her voluptuous ass.
As her eyes adjusted to the lights, Geena realized Russ wasn't even looking at her. He was sitting at the very end of the runway, scowling as he watched a long - legged blond writhe before him. The stripper turned, placing both hands on her ass and cupping her cheeks as she gyrated less than a yard from his face, and Geena felt a sudden, hot spurt of jealousy.
You're gonna regret this.
No, she wouldn't. She wouldn't. Determinedly, she suppressed the emotion, and strutted on her four - inch fuck - me heels to the pound and blare of the music. The hungry, approving gazes of the watching men brought with them an unaccustomed sense of sexual self - confidence, and she lengthened her strides. Let little Miss Long Legs gyrate as she chose. She, Geena, was queen of the runway tonight.
The blond must have heard her approach, because she blew Russ a kiss and moved aside, making room. Geena looked down, meaning to catch Russ's gaze, but instead found herself staring into the piercing emerald eyes of Flynn Davies.
They pinned her, gleaming, flicking down to her chest and over her half - naked body before rising again to her masked face. Under their scalding scrutiny, she felt utterly exposed, unable to breathe, trapped in a moment that seemed to stretch out forever.
God! What would it be like to be at this man's mercy? Her nipples tightened further at the mere thought, poking out against the thin, scratchy fabric covering them, and she felt a rush of liquid heat beneath the tiny strap of her g - string. Uncomfortably aware that she was simply standing there gawking, Geena jerked her hips in an awkward figure eight.
The music pounded in her veins. Her pulse thundered in her ears. What the hell was he, this man who was her fiancé's oldest friend? This man who could practically make her come just by looking at her?
Danger. That's what he was. Danger, and trouble.

THIS ISSUE’S AUTHOR SPOTLIGHT:
AUTHOR BIO: Jana Richards has tackled many writing projects over the years, from magazine articles and short stories to paranormal romantic suspense. She has a soft spot for romantic comedy and loves to create characters with a sense of humor that (hopefully) makes them as much fun to read as they are to write.
Jana lives in Western Canada with her husband Warren, along with two university aged daughters and a highly spoiled Pug/Terrier cross named Lou. The Interview:
GRACIE: I’m excited to have you here at The G - Spot, Jana! Please tell us a little about yourself and how and when you got into writing?
JANA: I’ve been writing for over 15 years, but I just began writing with an eye to publication about five or six years ago. I was first hooked on romance when I picked up a romance novel on vacation for some light reading. Like a lot of people who read and love romance novels I thought “I could do that! How hard could it be?” Boy, was I naïve! I’ve learned a lot since then, mostly by trial and error (lots of errors!). Crafting a compelling plot with engaging characters that capture the reader’s heart is not easy, but I can’t imagine doing anything else.
GRACIE: Is there any one thing or person in your life that inspired your writing? Any one thing or person that influenced the genre you write in?
JANA: The one person who inspired me most by her writing was Nora Roberts. I’ve always been blown away by her work and by how prolific she is. I want to be like Nora when I grow up. The one thing that influenced me early on was joining a romance writing group which I still belong to today. The members of the group have provided so much support and inspiration over the years. Writing is so solitary that it is great to have others to turn to who understand and love the genre as much as I do. It’s a treat to have people to talk to whose eyes don’t glaze over when you discuss plot points and character arcs.
GRACIE: What do you know now about writing and the publishing industry that you wish you’d known before you started?
JANA: I didn’t understand how solitary it could be. At one point I quit my day job in order to devote all my time to writing, but I discovered that I like to see people once and a while, perhaps talk to an actual human being who isn’t just a figment of my imagination. I’ve since gone back to work part - time and it’s an arrangement that suits me pretty well.
I didn’t understand how difficult it was going to be to break into publishing. It’s tough to be rejected because it feels so personal. I won’t say I’ve developed a tough skin from all the rejections over the years; that would be a lie. A rejection today hurts as much as the first one. But somehow I managed to keep writing and sending out manuscripts because I wanted it so badly.
GRACIE: Why don’t you share some of your current titles with us and give us a little story behind the story for each?
JANA: I have two books currently available. In Her Best Man Sarah Stevens experiences a bride’s worst nightmare: being dumped at the altar. When she goes on the Caribbean cruise meant to be her honeymoon in order to lick her wounds, she discovers her ex - fiance has sent his brother Will Marshall, the former best man, on the cruise as well. Everyone on board thinks they’re newlyweds, and Sarah is too embarrassed to set them straight. How is she supposed to share a tiny cabin with a man she barely knows? Even worse, how is she supposed to pretend that she and Will are on their honeymoon? Sarah discovers the best man for her really is the best man.
Seeing Things is a paranormal romantic suspense. Leah McKenna is a reluctant psychic who “sees” the kidnapping of a child. Leah’s psychic abilities have caused her much pain the past, but she knows she would never forgive herself if she could have saved this child but was too frightened to help. She tells the police what she knows. David Logan, the missing child’s uncle, doesn’t believe in psychic phenomena. But he can’t dismiss some of the things she tells him, things no one else knew about. He is forced to accept that her visions are real. Leah gradually learns to accept her unusual abilities. As Leah and David work together to find his five year old nephew Jeremy, they discover an extraordinary passion. But only if they trust each other and their love can they find David’s nephew and have a life together.
GRACIE: Of all the stories you’ve written, which is your favorite and why? JANA: That’s like asking which child is my favorite. But I’ll give it a shot. Probably my favorite (so far) is Her Best Man because it’s a fun story and I love the characters. Sarah starts out as a person who lets others take advantage of her but through the story she learns to stand up for herself and get what she wants. Will is a cool guy who travels the world and lives by his wits. He has a crazy sense of humor and an overactive imagination. But under the party boy façade he is a loyal brother whose family means everything to him. What he really needs is a good woman, and he finds that in Sarah.
GRACIE: Which of your characters is your favorite and why?
JANA: While I do love Will and Sarah, I’m particularly fond of a character from an upcoming book. Her name is Hannah Kramer and she’s a widow with a nine year old son. After her husband’s death she’s left with a farm drowning in debt. She turns her farm into a bed and breakfast in order to make ends meet and to keep the farm intact for her son. I love her because she’s so strong, and I admire strong people who accomplish things. She also is a person who has a deep loyalty to her community and fights for its survival.
GRACIE: What about your characters makes them unique and why?
JANA: I believe my characters are unique because they grow and change over time. They are strong people to begin with, like Hannah, but love helps them reach their true potential and gives them the strength to do things they thought were impossible.
GRACIE: What is your favorite aspect of the writing process? Your least favorite?
JANA: The excitement and promise of starting a new project is the aspect of writing I love the most. It’s always so much fun. But if the writing bogs down in the dreaded middle and I don’t know where to go, that’s the aspect of writing I enjoy least. I have several really great openings languishing on my hard drive that I hope to resurrect some day.
GRACIE: Are you a pantser or do you outline?
JANA: I like to outline because I like to know where I’m going. If I get stuck I can always look back to my outline for inspiration. But even the best outlines sometimes can’t anticipate every nuance of the story. There usually comes a point in the writing process when I have to become a pantser and just wing it. But hopefully by then, I know my story and my characters well enough to be able to “feel” what these people would do.
GRACIE: If you weren’t a writer, what other profession would you have chosen to pursue?
JANA: In university I seriously considered becoming a Speech Language Pathologist or an Audiologist. These are professionals who work with both children and adults who have speech impediments or hearing problems. Unfortunately, there wasn’t a program for Speech Language Pathology in my home province, and in fact there are only a few programs across Canada. I would have had to go away to the States to school, but at the time I just wasn’t able to do it.
So as a second choice I went with accounting. In my current day job, I’m an Office Administrator/accountant.
GRACIE: Who are some of your favorite authors and why? Name some of your favorite books. What are some of your favorite genres and why?
JANA: Like I said, Nora Roberts is one of my favorite authors. I also am a big fan of Jo Beverly, Mary Balogh, C.J. Carmichael and Barbara Dunlop, who are all Canadian writers. Canuck girls rock!
One of my favorite books by Nora Roberts is “Carnal Innocence” because the hero, at first glance, appears to be a somewhat lazy n’er - do - well. But as Ms. Roberts unfolds the story, she gradually reveals the hero’s true character. He is shown to be a sensitive, hard - working man who shields himself behind a layer of Southern charm. I love when a character turns out to be more, or grows into the person they are meant to be.
Some of my more recent favorites have been Mary Balogh’s “Slightly” series. I love her books because they are so full of emotion. You clearly feel what the characters are going through.
I enjoy both Historicals and contemporary romances. I enjoy a bit of mystery or a touch of the paranormal, mixed up with liberal amounts of humor in all the fiction I read.
GRACIE: What are you working on now? What should readers be looking forward to from you in the future?
JANA: I’m excited to announce that I have two more books being published in the next year and a half or so. In July 2008 Uncial Press http://www.uncialpress.com is publishing my book “A Long Way from Eden”. In this story Meg Evans’ son and Zack Martin’s teenage daughter announce they are having a baby. Zack is determined that these two young people marry. He grew up not knowing who his father was and is determined his grandchild not carry that stigma. Meg is just as determined that their children not marry. Forced into an abusive marriage by an unplanned pregnancy, she knows first hand that pregnancy alone is not a good enough reason to marry. Despite their differences, Zack and Meg feel a strong pull towards each other. The imminent arrival of their grandchild brings to the surface all kinds of old wounds and family secrets. They must exorcise the demons of the past in order to have a future together.
In 2009 Awe Struck E - Books http://www.awe - struck.net is publishing my novel “Till September”. Hannah Kramer is a widow determined to save her farm and her community. Quinn Anderson is just as determined to bring change to her community by selling farmland belonging to long - time residents to new immigrants. Hannah doesn’t know that Quinn is associated with a company from Toronto that is trying to buy out her friends and neighbors. The actions of this greedy company incense her. Even though she knows Quinn will be leaving in September, for the first time in her life she takes a chance and falls in love. But when she discovers that Quinn is responsible for the changes being forced on her community she is devastated and angry, and sends him away. The only way Hannah and Quinn can be together is if Hannah realizes she can’t stop change. In order to find happiness, she must put aside the past and embrace the future.
GRACIE: Do you have a website and/or how can readers contact you?
JANA: My website is www.janarichards.net and readers can reach me at jana.richards@hotmail.com I’d love for readers to check out my site and let me know what they think of it.
GRACIE: Where and how can readers purchase and/or read samples of your work?
JANA: “Her Best Man” and “Seeing Things” are currently available through www.uncialpress.com Excerpts of my work are available on my website and I also have free pieces of short fiction there as well.
GRACIE: What advice do you have for beginning writers?
JANA: Persevere. Finish what you start. Even if you never sell, the sense of accomplishment in completing a novel from beginning to end is huge. Once you know you’ve got what it takes to finish a novel, you’ll have the confidence you need to succeed as a writer.
GRACIE: Anything else about yourself or your writing you’d like to share?
JANA: I’m really excited to hear from readers. There’s nothing more wonderful than to hear that my work has made someone laugh or touched a chord with them.
I currently have about three works in progress and I hope to have many more stories to offer to readers in the near future.
GRACIE: Thanks so much for taking time from your busy schedule, Jana, to share yourself and your work with us at The G - Spot and giving us a little insight into your writing and the writing process! We’ll let you get back to writing those wonderful books you write! All the best!
