Welcome back to this issue of The G - Spot!

If you’re like me you’re deep in preparations for Turkey Day and in the midst of your Christmas shopping (if you still have any disposable cash to spend that is, what with all the economic turmoil. Disposable cash. Hmmmm. What a totally novel concept.). Since the next newsletter won’t release until 1/20/09 (Our new President - Elect’s Inauguration Day—Yay!) I’m wishing you all a wonderful Holiday Season and a Healthy, Happy and Successful New Year! To all my Canadian subscribers, I hope you all enjoyed a wonderful Thanksgiving!

MOVIES:

BLOOD AND CHOCOLATE: Wow, this was a real surprise. I didn’t know what to expect when I watched it on cable and saw the less - than - mediocre, one - and - a - half - star rating, but I was determined to watch it regardless. Shapeshifters (wolves) in Romania? Can’t go wrong. Starring relatively unknown actress Agnes Bruckner as an expatriate originally born in Romania before her father took the family and moved to America when she was a very young girl, the movie tells the tale of now - orphan Vivian (Bruckner) who is torn between her loyalty to her werewolf clan and her love for a human, Aidan (Hugh Dancy). Aidan is an expatriate himself, a comic book artist who is on the run from his father in American who he assaulted when the man threatened his life if he left to pursue his passion and not his father’s as a military man. The action really heats up when Gabriel, the alpha wolf to whom Vivian is promised (Olivier Martinez) sends his son Rafe to give Aidan a warning to leave the country. The young werewolf confronts the human with tragic and unexpected consequences as Aidan proves to be not as much a pushover as the werewolves believe him to be. This movie, to me, far surpassed its rating with enough action, adventure and romance to make it the perfect popcorn movie.

JUNO: Starring Ellen Page as the titular teen mother - to - be and Michael Cera as the clueless father this is an engaging and unlikely romance between teen parents - to - be and a lesson on love and longevity. Juno discovers that the perfect environment she has chosen for her unborn child to be brought up in, with perfect married and childless, well - to - do couple Vanessa and Mark Loring (Jennifer Garner and Jason Bateman) isn’t so perfect after all. Mark is going through a mid - life crisis and is sure he doesn’t want to be a father while Vanessa has wanted a baby for as long as she can remember. Juno, the precocious teen that still has so much to learn about life and love, is the most mature character and makes the hardest decision of all. A Grade - A+ screenplay and excellent stand - out performances by the leads in Page and Cera, but also wonderful supporting performances from Bateman, Garner, Allison Janney as Juno’s stepmom and J.K. Simmons as Juno’s down - to - earth and sympathetic father, highlight this movie. I enjoyed this one more than I thought I would.

NO RESERVATIONS: Starring Catherine Zeta Jones and Aaron Eckhart. This was a sensitive and sweet romantic comedy with a dash of tear - jerky drama to make it interesting. Catherine Zeta Jones is a regimented and talented chef in a popular restaurant in the Village who unexpectedly has to take custody of her niece Zoe when the little girl’s mother is killed in an accident. Aaron Eckhart is the fun - loving, nonchalant opera - singing chef that the restaurant owner hires to take up the slack when Catherine’s Kate is on personal leave helping her niece to assimilate to her new life. The sparks immediately fly between opposites Jones and Eckhart and there’s great chemistry and sexual tension. Aunt, niece and new lover all take center stage in this story and make for a tasty romance and a lovable story.

PRIDE AND GLORY: Starring two of my favorite actors—Edward Norton and Colin Farrell—this was an excellent cop drama with the lines blurred between good and bad by Colin’s sergeant Jimmy Egan who’s let the power of his job and his greed and jealousy make him get into bed with and steal product and money from drug dealers. He and his crew of crooked cops are the kind of men that give the badge a bad name and the NYPD a horrible reputation in the community that they are charged to serve and protect. Norton’s Ray Tierney comes from a family of cops and is a strong and sensitive cop with the missing person’s unit who two years previous was the victim of a shooting. The unarmed suspect died under questionable circumstances, but Ray was exonerated of any wrong - doing. The case, however, has haunted him ever since and with Jimmy’s boys being killed in an apparent ambush and Ray being dragged onto the task force by his father Fran Sr. (John Voight), Ray’s feelings of confusion and guilt resurface. The performances were excellent and convincing (Farrell, in particular, was frighteningly believable as a bad cop with almost no moral compass when it comes to dealing with the people who live in the poor, urban neighborhoods that he patrols) and the action is well - paced. I enjoyed this movie a lot.

THE NAMESAKE: This movie is a dramatic turn for Kal Penn, more famously known for the stoner, Harold and Kumar movies. Here he is a young, first - generation East Indian - American torn between the traditions of his Bengali parents and America, his place of birth. This is an insightfully done movie with a sympathetic view into the Indian culture and the difficulties of assimilation. Kal Penn gives an engaging and sensitive performance as the ambivalent Gogol Ganguli who finally comes to terms with his dual heritage at a tragic price.

THE WATERHORSE: LEGEND OF THE DEEP: This was the adorable story of a lonely boy who’s lost his father in the war and finds the egg of the mythical waterhorse. He raises the seahorse from a baby until it reaches astronomical proportions, too big for the household bathtub, and with the help of his older sister and his mother’s handyman, a kindred war hero, releases the sea creature into the loch. Great special effects and a heartwarming friendship between boy and creature highlight this movie topped off by an enchanting ending.

TWILIGHT: Introspective and sensitive Bella Swan is a bit of a loner. So when she moves from the hot sunny desert of Arizona to rainy and cold Forks, Washington (population 3,000+) to stay with her sheriff father for a while, she isn't expecting to easily fit in with the kids at her new high school. Edward Cullen is a loner too, but for much different reasons than Bella, though they do share something in common: an instant chemical attraction to each other. It is Edward's attraction and protective instincts, however, that puts young Bella in the path of a mad vampire as much as Edward tries to avoid her and keep her safe.

The story took a little while to unfold with the teens' tender getting - to - know - you moments taking center stage, but once Edward's true nature is revealed, the action moves forward fast and furious.

There is a subplot involving rival vampires hunting and killing humans in the area, and when Bella falls in the sights of this group, not only her life but the lives of her loved ones are put in jeopardy.

I went into Twilight not really knowing what to expect except that it was a YA vampire romance. That was enough for me. I was pleasantly pleased and surprised by this movie.

The actors who played Bella and Edward (Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson) were naturals on screen with excellent, believable chemistry. Pattinson is particularly brooding and intense and Stewart has a believable innocence, vulnerability and strength to her performance. They and the subplot characters made the story come alive with danger and humor. I especially loved the scenes where Edward shows his superhuman prowess taking flight through the treetops with Bella faithfully clinging to him, and the scene with the Cullen family playing baseball in a thunderstorm was cute and enjoyable. As the movie had a cliffhanger ending, I'm looking forward to seeing more installments in Bella and Edward's story.

Finally...I finished BRUISED BUT NOT BROKEN (10/20/08)! Well, at least the first draft (because you know how we writers are. If we could, we’d recall the book after it’s released and on the shelves just to revise, and nip tuck a few more things to make it just PERFECT.).

I’ve got ideas percolating and have already started work on another ménage story, this one with identical twin brothers (Jesse and Jackson Reynolds) who were raised and live and toil on a working dude ranch with widowed father Jeremiah. The Double R is a family owned and run business, and the boys (men now at 27) have taken over the reins of the day - to - day operations, Jess being the cow boss, and Jax his second - in - command. Here are the working premise and blurbs I have so far:

Almost two decades after turning her back on the simple life in favor of the big city and a successful career, Tamara Carpenter is summoned home.

Eighteen years after leaving the ranch where she was raised, family duty forces Tamara back to the fold. The fold, however, has undergone extensive changes, the least of which aren’t the twin boys Tamara practically raised and loved like her little brothers. Only Jess and Jax Reynolds aren’t little boys anymore.

Like her absentee mother, Tamara Carpenter was never cut out for country life. But when her estranged father suffers a debilitating injury she rushes back to her childhood home to find other things besides his health changed—namely the twin boys she practically raised.

Devastated by Tamara’s exit, Jess has strived to make The Double R a success, burying himself working the ranch. Tamara’s return upsets the emotional balance he’s found in her absence and forces him to face his unresolved feelings for her and his part in her older lover's firing years ago.

Open - minded and fun - loving, Jax prides himself on knowing how to have a good time and trying to get Jess to do the same. Tamara’s homecoming is Jax’s opportunity to show his brother what he’s been missing holding a grudge all these years and bring two of the most important people in the world to him together.

Jax and Jess are complete opposites, of course, but when it comes to Tamara are in total agreement—they both miss her and want her. At thirty - six, Tamara is nine years the twins’ senior, but this doesn’t mean a lick of difference to the young men and soon will not make much of a difference to Tamara who against her better judgment falls for the hunky, gorgeous men she can barely reconcile with the little boys whose diapers she once changed. The age issue, however pales in comparison to the more taboo issues of the ménage a trois and the trios racial differences (Tamara is bi - racial and Jax and Jess are Caucasian). Also, Tamara is a driven, ambitious, successful city - slicker lawyer while Jax and Jess are country boys at heart (are you seeing where this is going already? I hope so, because I have no idea. Don’t you just love it!). Anyway, it’s shaping up to, of course, be cross - genre (Contemporary/May - December/Ménage.). I’m not feeling any paranormal elements yet or BDSM, but this might change as I get to know the characters and the story a little more. Right now they’re only whispering in my ear (Jax and Jess’s father Jeremiah, however, is shouting loud and clear and is shaping up to be a pretty colorful character and the mastermind behind getting Tamara back to the ranch to be with her alienated father). I’m feeling a home - is - where - the - heart - is type theme with that old east - meets - west, opposites attract stand - by conflict. During some research I came across a quote by Oscar Wilde and a couple of words jumped out at me to spawn the working title—WICKED MYTHS. I started out with UNFINISHED BUSINESS but it seemed too generic. I’ll have to see how the story, characters and themes develop to know which title fits best or maybe come up with something even better. After all, BRUISED BUT NOT BROKEN was TAMING DONNA for the longest time before I settled on the final title. Anyway, that’s what I have so far. You’ll know more when I do, LOL.

GCM: Like most of my titles, Eternal Designs is a play on words. Zoe is an interior designer by trade (hence the design part of the title), but also I waned to make a statement about other types of design, the machinations, schemes, and plots that men are forever hatching for one reason or another - plots like assassination and revenge, to name a few - plots that will always be afoot as long as humans exist (this is where the eternal comes in).

Helping them along on their journey are the mysterious, and small - town siblings, Konrad and Klara who are renting out a room to the brothers as the twins try to save up enough money to make it on their own.

Aki, an ambitious medical student assists Konrad in his makeshift lab as the American works feverishly to find the answers behind and a cure to his younger sister's respiratory illness. But like the relationship between Aki and Akeno, the brother and sister's relationship is one fraught with intrigue and prohibition.

Aki is the older twin and, driven by a past incident where he was unable to defend his brother from the predators of their homeland back in Japan, he spends his days now trying to protect Akeno, the seemingly more submissive and "weak" twin from his own naiveté and the world at large.

KATANA DUET is a unique and enthrallingly executed story, one of intrigue, forbidden love, familial betrayal and loyalty that comes to an explosive and surprising climax and will leave the reader reflective if not totally staggered. This is the kind of story and characters that sneak up on and stay with the reader, haunting her long after the last page is read. The subject matter is definitely not for the squeamish or readers of delicate sensibilities, but it is well - worth the time and risk to experience Aki and Akeno's world.

PROLOGUE

It was a harsh land. A land created for survivors. Ruggedly beautiful in summer sharp snow - capped granite peaks jabbed at crisp blue skies, their formidable structures providing a starkly contrasting backdrop. Endless carpets of wildflowers, moss and boldly coloured soil blanketed the vast horizons. And then there were the brutal winters that sealed the land in a tight cocoon of glacial ice, numbing cold and darkness. Far from the eyes of the governing authorities, it was the perfect place to experiment into areas that would otherwise be frowned upon. And it was, after all, only one Beluga whale. Even if the carcass was later found, it would be impossible for anyone to trace the elements back to the source.
The man watched as his subordinates hand cranked the cable that ran from the small but sturdy crane to the net encased mammal not thirty feet from the stern of the mid - sized fishing vessel. The boat rocked with the thrashing of the pathetic creature as it heaved its blanched hide in protest of the rough hemp. The erratic jerking and yanking was offset by the hypnotic rhythm of Hudson Bay’s stiff tides and currents and the man wanted the thing to be done and over so he could return to the safety of land.
He studied the whale as it was pulled alongside the ship. Alabaster white, it was a beautiful mammal. Almost a pity to destroy the thing. But as seemed to be the norm in this crazy world, it was an innocent at the hands of someone else’s agenda. The whale stilled and, as instructed, the men kept it half - submerged. There was no point in stressing it any more than necessary.
He walked to the rail and reached down into a box lined with foam packing materials. Pulling out a large syringe, the man held it up to the grey skies and eyed the dose of clear fluid it contained. It should be enough to give them an accurate testing. If it could kill the whale, it would most certainly do its job on its other intended victims.
He patted the animal’s streamlined, smooth skin gently, almost apologetically. And then he plunged the syringe deep, emptying it of its contents. Surprisingly, the creature never moved. Its eyes were just above the waterline and it rolled the nearest one back to fasten on the man with the syringe. As though it knew its own fate. Returning the instrument back to its case, the man settled back to wait. He figured maybe three hours at best and then the creature would begin to show signs.
Ignoring the quiet whale, the man filled the gradual passing of time by scanning the nearby shore, keeping an alert eye out for any human intervention. It would be awkward explaining what had just been done. Better that there were no witnesses. Along a rocky outcropping, a flock of long - tailed ducks waddled and fussed, pleased with the mild summer as they preened their young and themselves. The tundra was vibrant with unusual and persistent life in the short span of time allowed for the warm season.
The man knew all about the tundra. He had studied it with great detail. He knew every plant from the arctic cotton that swayed in the crisp winds to the lousewort and saxifrage that covered the ground in a tenacious blanket. He had followed the migratory paths of the caribou, seen the polar bear in action and felt his heart swell with the aerial
ballets danced by the peregrine falcons, snowy owls and Sabine’s gulls. This was a land he could truly love given a different life. But he only had the life he’d been handed and he would make certain it counted for something. In spite of those who had shaped it brutally and unknowingly. Because of them.
He turned his eye back to the Beluga. It had settled into the net after its first violent protest and continued to wait patiently for whatever it was meant to wait for.
The creature had earned his instant respect and again he felt a twinge of remorse. Glancing at his watch, he was surprised to find that the three hours had come and gone in his fascinated study of the landscape. He moved closer to the seized whale and examined every inch of its sturdy form. Nothing. A frown flickered across his brow and he turned to his associate. “Are you certain the dose was right?”
The smaller, bespectacled man merely shrugged and nodded.
“I wonder what’s gone wrong then.” He turned back to the whale and gave it another once - over.
“I don’t understand it, sir. This compound is strong enough that it should have shown its mark long before now. Maybe I should draw a tissue sample and take it back to the lab to see what went wrong.”
The man nodded and stepped out of the smaller man’s path. “Get it done then, release the poor creature and we’ll be off. I’ll contact my chopper pilot and he can pick us up on shore. Don’t dawdle.” He gave his associate a knowing look and reached into
his pocket for his two - way radio. “We’re ready.” He barked the two words into the receiver, waited for acknowledgement and then turned to the vessel’s captain. “We’ll pick up my chopper on shore. I’ll need your life boat to get myself and the doctor there. Would that be a problem?”
The ten thousand dollars above the rental fee for the fishing vessel pretty much guaranteed that it likely wouldn’t be and the Captain shrugged his submission.
Finished with his ministrations over the whale, the doctor turned and secured the tissue sample along side the empty syringe in the padded case. He rose and heaved the bulky case into his arms almost jealously and maneuvered across the open deck to where the lifeboat was being lowered to the water’s rolling surface. Before long, the two men were settled, side by side, in the small wooden motor boat and heading for shore.
No one on board the ship could have heard the small burst of sound deep in the bowels of the vessel where the engine room was located. If they had they would be scrambling like ants at a picnic in order to repair the small but effective damage done to the resting engine. So absorbed in the approach of the sleek helicopter were they that they also missed the second muffled pop that punched a small hole in one of the lowest of the ship’s seams.
From his perch in the small heaving life boat the man could tell exactly when their first inkling came that something was wrong. He smiled as the ship tilted slightly more than it should have in the Bay’s choppy waters. The Captain turned away from the rail and his retreating passengers tossing orders to his men and then he turned a wicked eye back to the life boat. The man saluted him, the smile widening on his face. From somewhere aboard a crew member shouted that the ship had sprung a leak.
The first mate scrambled to the bridge with the intent of turning the vessel to shore, but as he fired up the engine, the small damage ballooned into a loud explosion and black smoke roiled up from the stairwell that led to the ship’s center.
The Captain clutched the rail and bellowed for his men to jump ship and
head for shore. If the freezing water didn’t kill them, they might find a way to civilization using the small row boat. Against the backdrop of the distant shouts the man felt the muffled scrape of the boat’s contact with the gravel of the shore and he calmly stepped from the still bobbing craft. From the small cargo area of the helicopter the pilot pulled out a can of gasoline and offered it to his boss. He shook his head in refusal. Let the pilot do it.
He watched dispassionately as his pilot poured the can of liquid over the life boat then and again he smiled as tongues of yellow and red flame leapt from the wooden structure, consuming it in an instant conflagration. He cast a sly glance at the small figures splashing stiffly in the frigid waters. The fire loudly broadcast their fate to them in the heat waves and smoke that plunged skyward, shifting and gyrating with the increasing rotation of the chopper’s blades. He stood a few moments longer enjoying the life giving heat, watching as it faded into weak embers and then he nodded to his pilot and settled himself in a back seat leaving the front passenger seat to his associate in crime. The sleek bird rose in the air, hovered for a moment and then slowly lifted above the smoldering ruins to the clearer air.
The man continued to watched as the crew struggled and splashed their way toward shore. Few of them would make it through the arctic waters and those who did would not likely survive in the harsh tundra. The ship sank quickly, its heavy diesel engine pulling it under the icy waves. Within minutes no sign of it remained other than a dark shadow beneath the churning surface of the Bay. One by one, the men of the small
fishing vessel The Swordfish slipped beneath the waters as they too succumbed to the frigid waters. He nodded to himself and reached forward to tap his pilot’s shoulder. He’d seen enough. No witnesses. That’s what he had decided. That’s what he got. The chopper tilted and sped off toward the south leaving the land as it had been. Empty. Stark. Barren. Incredible.

THE INTERVIEW:

GRACIE: I’m excited to have you here at The G - Spot, Donna! Please tell us a little about yourself and how and when you got into writing?

DONNA: My writing career had its roots in high school English when my Grade 13 (yes we had Grade 13 in Canada ) teacher told me if I did nothing else, I should write. I took a sabbatical for several years and then wrote an article and submitted it to Angels on Earth. They bought the article. I didn’t know just how rare that was until my Long Ridge Writers Group teacher told me several years after that happened. As my children left home, I took writing more seriously and began submitting to national magazines. My articles were accepted. I tried my hand at novel writing and I love it.

GRACIE: Is there any one thing or person in your life that inspired your writing? Any one thing or person that influenced the genre you write in?

DONNA: As I mentioned, my high school English teacher Mrs. Quiggly inspired me to write but Robert Ludlum, John Grisham and Frank Peretti were large influences in what genre I chose. It was such a thrill to have some of my readers compare my writing to Robert Ludlum and Frank Peretti.

GRACIE: What do you know now about writing and the publishing industry that you wish you’d known before you started?

DONNA: I know that it is so important to be patient. I was forewarned that I would get enough rejection slips to decorate my office. That helped prepare me for the hard work in promoting. I wish I had known just how difficult it is to promote but that has come with time.

GRACIE: Please, give us a little story behind the story and how you came to write VENGEANCE.

DONNA: Being an army brat, I have a lot of background information about military. It was easy to bring the Vietnam War into the novel. I also have a heart for the victims in life so my books usually try to bring help to the underdog. But I also have a strong belief that we make choices with what we will become in spite of our traumas and struggles. We can choose to let our abusers continue to abuse us through our own actions or we can rise above the abuse and choose a better life. That choice is paramount in this novel.

GRACIE: That’s very wise and profound, Donna. I like the theme.

Of all the stories you’ve written, which is your favorite and why?

DONNA: I have to say that VENGEANCE is my favourite novel and yet the short story in the Hot Apple Cider anthology is also my favourite. They have the same thing in common—that choice. Both stories feature a character who has a choice to make that will affect another person or persons. That is real life stuff. We all have that same responsibility. These are my favourites because that choice is brought out so clearly.

GRACIE: I know this is like asking a mother which is her favorite child, but which of your characters is your favorite and why?

DONNA: James Benedict—hands down. He’s not perfect. He gets frustrated. He’s not the most attractive person out there so his main charm is his honesty and integrity. He doesn’t mask his feelings but doesn’t always make the right choices with them. He’s got that bit of edge that allows him to do his job well but he’s got a soft spot for a grandmother who reminds him to remain human in a job that could steal his humanity.

GRACIE: What about your characters makes them unique and why?

DONNA: They are unique in that they are three dimensional and yet they only exist on paper—they are not fashioned after anyone living. They have likes and dislikes that may or may not be used in the book—favourite colours, foods, people—all that goes well beyond the story. This makes them as real to the reader as if they actually did live.

GRACIE: What is your favorite aspect of the writing process? Your least favorite?

DONNA: I love putting together the outline and then doing the final edits. The actually writing of the story can be a challenge because my mind works faster than my fingers.

GRACIE: Are you a pantser or do you outline?

DONNA: The first novel I wrote—well—I just sat down and wrote from beginning to end. VENGEANCE was done with an outline. I prefer the outline. I can review it and slip in details without side tracking the story.

GRACIE: If you weren’t a writer, what other profession would you have chosen to pursue?

DONNA: Oh my! That’s a tough one. I probably would end up working in a physically demanding job because I like physical work as well. Strange how things work out

GRACIE: Who are some of your favorite authors and why? Name some of your favorite books. What are some of your favorite genres and why?

DONNA: I definitely consider John Grisham, Robert Ludlum and Frank Peretti as the top three. And I haven’t read a single of their books that I didn’t like. I also like Keith Clemons, N.J. Lindquist—I just finished GLITTER OF DIAMONDS by Lindquist and loved it. Favourite books? LORD OF THE RINGS, THE LION, THE WITCH, THE WARDROBE, CRIMSON TAPESTRY, THE PELICAN BRIEF, THE BOURNE series, THIS PRESENT DARKNESS and PIERCING THE DARKNESS. Oh, and Ted Dekker books too. Wow! The list is long.

GRACIE: What are you working on now? What should readers be looking forward to from you in the future?

DONNA: I’m working on another suspense novel but this one is a bit edgy. I have been in contact with some top medical specialist and am writing about a medical case that could become an alternative to abortion. I’ve put it in novel form for greater readership and we’ll see what will happen. The beauty of this book is it should please both pro - life and pro - choice alike.

In May of 2009 you’ll see my next novel released called FIRES OF FURY. This one is through Awe - struck E - books (http://www.awe - struck.net) so is in e - book format. I just finished another romance manuscript—this one a western—and will be looking into getting that published soon.

GRACIE: What advice do you have for beginning writers?

DONNA: I highly recommend beginning writers to invest in the education needed to write. As mentioned earlier, I went online and received my freelance writing certificate and my novel writing certificate through Long Ridge Writers Group which is a subsidiary of the University of Connecticut. It was well worth the cost as I learned to avoid the pitfalls that short circuit too many writers.

GRACIE: Anything else about yourself or your writing you’d like to share?

DONNA: The best advice I can offer is for any writer to connect with a writing group. That is the best way to fine tune one’s craft in a friendly setting. I would be lost without my group the Ready Writers and our fearless leader Mary Haskett.
