Hard to believe that spring is fast approaching. I've been up on the central coast again enjoying the sun until the rain hit last night. But I much prefer that to the snow and ice where I have been staying in Big Bear.
Although I used to love it, two winters in the high desert reminded me of the perks of not dealing with it. Having said that, this winter has been wet and mostly filled with rain so I'm glad for the arrival of snow as it helps the local economy.
Here in California, the animals and plants have indicated that it is indeed spring. They have all been scampering about, migrating in or budding early. On a sea safari with Captain Yohn the voyage was filled with migratory birds in full breeding attire. I saw my first wild otter pup and know that other marine mammal babies are on the way.
Now as it happens, I stayed with a pal and Bill the cat. Sometime I can't help myself and so stared, "The Bill Project." Bill the cat always seeks to grab attention.
Soon a hula hoop arrived and in two days he was jumping back and forth through the hoop for praise and treats. His owner was thrilled and wondered if I traveled with my training bag. In case you wonder, I don't.
As spring approaches, it is a good reminder to spring forward into new adventures with your animals or in your business. I've continued to work on new projects with the first phase scheduled to be in place by March 31st. It has been interesting and frustrating as I've been working with an advisor who has made me think and operate differently.
Truth be told, I recognize the very process since it happens with my students, trainees, and business clients. Change is not comfortable but it is good.
Along with spring, change is in the air. I'll be moving and traveling and have no idea what will transpire. In the meantime, hoping that as you spring forward, good things happen.
Happy Tails & Sails!

Spring is fast approaching and a seasonal changes signals an opportunity to clear out the old and implement the new. I recently had a discussion with a business making the same mistakes over and over again.
Often, the consequence is a loss of revenue as well as a waste of valuable time and resources. Here were a few points to consider.
1.What you think works might not be working at all.
Since it takes 5-7 exposures to convert someone to a customer, it is super important to track where the results are coming from. "You can't measure what you can't track" is one of my favorite quotes because if you are not tracking where the conversion comes from, you can't know what is really working. By tracking, I am referring to the use of identification codes, special landing pages, and tracking phone numbers. Using those practices results in facts not assumptions.
2.Even if business is 90% booked off-season and full in-season, you still need to market.
If your business is almost always booked solid and gets regular referrals, how do you make sure it stays that way? Do you still want to bring in more revenue? What if your source dries up? Some businesses get into the pattern of being super busy then not busy at all because they stop marketing. However, inflation, maintenance and other costs continue to rise. Marketing remains essential and when a business tops out, then price increases, expansion, or finding ways to duplicate success becomes vital.
3.We tried X and it didn't work.
How do you know for sure? Did you test or quantify? Sometimes an idea about marketing efforts is erroneous. Did you try (or assign staff to do it) without understanding how it fits into the entire strategy? In today's market you have to have all the pieces in place to get it right. Each piece is part of the success funnel and key to staying competitive and visible. The reality? Growing and running a business usually does not leave time to get tasks outside of your business operations completed.
