In May I got to travel to Murrieta Elementary School to provide an assembly program for 140 third graders! The “Book Secrets” event was fun despite the heat wave. The kids are going to write short essays and
then each class is going to vote for “Best in Class” and submit them to me for publication on http://www.arkanimals.com. Then I am going to
ask YOU get to vote on the very best! The winner will receive a couple of prizes so stay tuned for the link and info. Topics: If you were an animal what animal would you be and why? OR If you could meet any animal
what one would it be and why?

2. Question(s) for the Month

Last month’s question asked about your experiences with pet insurance or wills. I did not receive any comments on the wills, but I did get a couple of responses on the insurance issue.

When I offered pet insurance to my clients in the early 1990’s it was still too early for people to see the logic for the service. Now, due to escalating fees for care and the more complicated services like surgery,
chemotherapy and X-rays, more people are shopping for coverage.

Julie found out that her insurance carrier would not cover a situation with roots connected to a canine (breed) birth defect. Just like shopping for
insurance for humans, you should read the fine print and ask about exclusions. In some cases you might want to have an attorney take a look at the policy or at least get some professional advice on the matter.

The largest pet insurance company in the United States is VPI or Veterinary Pet Insurance out of Brea, California. The group covers 340,000 policies and has seen a sixfold increase from 1995.

Pet insurance is still pretty new in the USA but it began more than 30 years ago in Europe. Did you know that 12% of English pet owners have insurance for their animal companions while 49% of Swedish pet owners insure their companions?

Pet insurance issues also arise in your homeowners’ policy. Many companies will not insure or renew a policy if you have specific breeds as pets. In most cases the breeds considered a high risk include pit bulls, rottweilers, Staffordshire terriers, Presa Canarios, Akitas, Doberman pinschers, huskies, wolf-hybrids or any dog with an aggressive history.

About one out of four claims on homeowner policies involve dog bites and insurance industry estimates the total societal cost from canine chomps is $1 BILLION a year including insurance costs, medical bills, and legal fees. Insurance costs alone? The last numbers available from the Insurance Information Institute were for 2003--when insurers paid out $322 million!

If you have one of the insurance industry’s red flagged breeds, you can get around some of them by obtaining the American Kennel Club’s (AKC) Canine Good Citizenship certification. You can get the certification through one of the many clinics offered and more information is available from the AKC website. You can also invite the underwriter to visit and meet your pets to prove you have good dogs.

3. Critter Chronicles: Mosquito Madness

Okay, I am going to share this story with you because it is--errrrr, a bit embarrassing--but also an amusing reminder that it is time to take some pet precautions.

Most of you know that I live near the lake in the forest of the San Bernardino Mountains. As the weather has changed the bugs have emerged. It is also time for gardening and those small critters are hungry!

Due to the draught, I haven’t had much of a problem with anything like mosquitos or worries about a proper garden. However I decided to start weeding on the hillside below my deck as the foliage is getting thick from all the precipitation last winter and spring.

Outfitted with jeans, a good shirt and gloves, I began the project. The sun was setting and the temperature dropped. I should have known better.

My derrière was the highest point because I bent down to pull the weeds. Busy rummaging through the rocky soil, I was totally immersed in the project until my rump became itchy!

Wouldn’t you know it—the mosquitos found the highest point and a good sized target to dive-bomb! They bit through my jeans and left me with a line of red welts! The only other bite was on my hand.

At any rate, my neighbor suggested I get the repellent wet wipes for the future. She uses them for her dog. A simply wipe over ears and a dab on the muzzle helps deter the little demons. Don’t use the product all over
an animal as they will ingest it when they groom or chew. You can also find homeopathic products or check with your veterinarian for animal specific pest deterrents.

The point of sharing my story is to remind you that it is flea, tick and mosquito season so take precautions for yourself and your pets now to avoid escalated problems!

4. Book: Secrets to Lifelong Prosperity PLUS Har-Money Cards

On my weekend trip last month, I stopped off in Larchmont (in Los Angeles, California) to meet with musician and author, Heidi Baer. During a fabulous lunch at the Café du Village, HM Baer shared an advance copy of her new book “Secrets to Lifelong Prosperity.” This is the companion book to her fabulous Har-Money™ Cards and it is hot off the press.

Heidi Baer and I originally met at Book Expo America (the largest book industry event in the United States) a couple of years ago. Our Canadian pals got us together and we all frolicked through the evening hotspots of Los Angeles.

Har-Money™ Cards are designed for different uses. I select a card every day and ponder the message contained on my selection. Each card in the deck resembles a miniature hundred dollar bill but contains
a different prosperity law on one side and more information about the specific principle on the other.

The exciting thing about her new book is that it is a more in-depth look at each prosperity law. The text elaborates on the topic by including activities, additional tips and insights on prosperity.
