1. Tales from the Trips (Latest News)
Wow, November is already here! I am sticking close to home and finishing up my book over the next two months. In the meantime,I am also working on setting up the new shopping cart and other odd jobs.

I just got back from an event down in Palm Springs. My friend Elivia Melodey asked me to help her with her gig at the Doral Resort. The Whole Life Expo & Psychic Fair was very fun—except for the scare. One of the vendors asked me to try a sample of his product and after sampling it I immediately went into a serious allergic reaction. I felt my throat swelling shut and a subsequently break-out in hives. The good news is that I didn’t go into anaphylactic shock or have to get paramedic help. Which was a good thing because I am
pretty calm and too cool and collected in an emergency and nobody really took it seriously!

I have not had that type of reaction since I was about eight and it was pretty spooky. Citrus water helped cut the reaction (to nut oils) and a dose of Benadryl® helped further. However, I was hallucinating on the way home and pretty wiped out from the ordeal—-both physically and from the stress. I am pretty good today.

My event just prior to the trip was cancelled and I found myself engulfed in a fog—-literally. Locals know the dangers of traveling on the rim of these mountains. The fog gets so thick you cannot see the lines on the
road or anything around you. Anyway, I spent the evening with a pal and headed back up in the am.

Most of October was spent in “Puppy Therapy.” Someone asked me whose therapy it was—-mine of course. If you have never trampled, mouthed or loved by a litter of ten puppies I can highly recommend it. (I talked a bit
about this at if you want to read more details.)

My role as surrogate aunt was very fulfilling. I met them all shortly after they were born and have been with them as they have grown and gone to new homes. Three remain but I am sure they will be gone shortly.

Many of my neighbors volunteered to help with “sleep overs.” This is where the pups got to stay overnight elsewhere and then return to the litter. All the
socializing with humans and dogs make this litter very well adjusted and is a unique angle for socialization and less trauma during placement.

The other news is that people have been booking appointments for animal career counseling and animal behavior from my website so thanks for your referrals.

Have a great month and thanks for your continued support!
2. Question(s) for the Month
Last month I asked everyone if they dressed up their pets or included them in Halloween or Harvest Festival celebrations. Many of you do but did you know that the sales of pet costumes has increased annually by 15-18%
over the past five years?

According to Howard Beige (Rubie’s Costume Company of New York), pet owners bought six percent of this year’s Halloween costumes!

Howl-o-ween celebrations are held all around the nation and costume competitions are held as fundraisers and even on some of the national morning shows along with efforts to get the critters adopted. There
are even parades with dogs, cats, ponies, goats, turtles and rabbits in their finest attire.

When Rubie’s first offered pet costumes seven years ago, they only offered six—-now they offer 40 including the Star Wars characters Yoda and Darth Vader (which are the most popular). Super Dog, Scooby Doo, Pimp Dog, Taxi Cab and other unique costumes were worn by “Haute Dogs” this year.

Prices have also increased with the interest. Once you get a costume for $5 but now it isn’t unusual to find one for $15 or more. So, plan your next year celebrations and don’t forget to include your pet!

My question(s) for you for this month:
How concerned are you about the Dog Flu (Canine Influenza)?

If you have any tips or hints to share on this topic please email them!

Thanks! I look forward to hearing from you.
3. Critter Chronicles: Canine Influenza aka Dog Flu
So just how concerned should you be over canine influenza? The recent news about this dog flu has many canine owners up in arms. My last review on this topic was news released during the third week
of October:

What is the Dog Flu?
The dog flu (canine influenza) is a highly contagious respiratory infection of dogs caused by a virus closely related to the virus that causes equine influenza. It is thought that the equine influenza virus mutated to produce the canine influenza virus.

Is Canine Influenza severe?
There are two types of the canine influenza virus, one is a mild form and the other is more severe and accompanied by pneumonia. Most dogs exposed to the virus become infected and nearly 80% show disease symptoms. Fortunately, most affected dogs have the
mild form. Because this is a new disease, almost all canines are susceptible and have no immunity. Fatal cases of pneumonia resulting from a dog flu infection have been reported but the 5-8% fatality rate is low and appears to pose the most risk to animals with compromised health or advanced age.

Mild Form of Canine Influenza:
The mild form of canine influenza has particular symptoms that include a soft, moist cough that persists for 10 to 30 days. Some dogs may exhibit a dry cough similar to "kennel cough" (caused by Bordetella bronchiseptica/parainfluenza). So, the dog flu
virus has been frequently mistaken for "kennel cough." Some animals may also have a thick nasal discharge, which is usually caused by a secondary bacterial infection.

Severe Form of Canine Influenza:
In the severe form of canine influenza, dogs develop high fevers (104ºF to 106ºF) and clinical signs of pneumonia (increased respiratory rates and difficulty breathing). Pneumonia may be due to a secondary bacterial infection.

How is it spread & how you can help prevent infection?
Canine influenza virus can be spread via direct contact with from infected dogs, and by contact with contaminated objects such as toys, waterbowls, bedding and other surfaces. Avoid taking your pet to locations where dogs are coughing or exhibiting other signs of
respiratory disease such as dog parks, kennels and similar public areas.

If you work or play with dogs, make sure that your clothing, equipment, surfaces, and hands are cleaned and disinfected after interactions to prevent disease transmission.

The American Veterinary Medical Association said:
“The first recognized outbreak is believed to have occurred in Florida racing greyhounds in January 2004. From June to August of 2004, outbreaks of respiratory disease were reported at 14 tracks in 6 states (Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Kansas, Texas, and
West Virginia). Between January and May of 2005, outbreaks occurred at 20 tracks in 11 states (Arizona, Arkansas, Colorado, Florida, Iowa, Kansas, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Texas, West Virginia, and Wisconsin). Infection has also been confirmed in
pet dogs in California, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia,
Massachusetts, North Carolina, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Washington State, and Washington, DC. These cases occurred in animal shelters, humane societies, rescue groups, pet stores, boarding kennels, and veterinary clinics.”

If your dog shows symptoms that lead you to suspect infection with the dog flu, schedule an appointment with your veterinarian so your dog can be evaluated. If canine influenza is suspected, your vet will begin treatment to help boost your pet’s immune system.
