I am not late often and so apologize for the delay in getting this newsletter off to you. I’ve been very busy with life and pretty much everything is on hold while I finalize my book due in to my editor shortly. So, this newsletter is going to be short!

The good news is that I finally got the vision for the final draft and now am working heavily on pulling that together. I think you will love the final result and am grateful for all the support I’ve received from those that I have interviewed and who have donated photos, prayers and passages for the cause.

I have to confess that I did take two days off for a trip to Desert Hot Springs resort area. We actually left during one of the largest storms of the season but it ended up being a _great_ experience and it was nice to get away from the cold.

2. Question(s) for the Month

My question(s) for you for this month: What burning question do you want to submit for next month’s issue?

My big concern this month is the hoopla over the movie, “Eight Below.” When the media highlights any species of pet, hordes of people become enamored with the idea of owning that type of critter. Unfortunately, this creates a big flood of irresponsible breeding and sales of animals.

This is bad for the animals since most people discover that those critters are not the right pet for them. Many of you know that I used to train animal actors for the movie and television industry. Those animals you see on the screen are highly trained professionals. Also, there are usually a few creatures playing the same role.

3. Critter Chronicles

I’ve been very busy training puppies and am amazed at just how many baby animals are already on the ground and ready for training.

Most people wait until their pets get older but the time to start them in school is right when they arrive in the home.

Most animal training programs suggest that you wait until the pet is an adolescent before you start training. I don’t agree since you have to endure the damage and poor behavior until you get that animal into a manners program. Then you not only have to train what you want but also have to untrain the bad behavior.

The real reason behind the delay is that puppies have very little attention span. You have to train them in short spurts with more repetitions instead of longer sessions. They also get bored and tired so you have to have breaks in between the sessions.

Most of my students do a session of work with their pups (up to five minutes max) until they get success and then they get to play. They are required to give 20 times the positive feedback to every negative correction and to build vocabulary so that the animal’s
IQ is raised.

Puppy training is fun and positive and if any of your friends or acquaintances have a new pup _please_ encourage them to start professional work with their critter ASAP.
