I headed North to spend a Happy New Year with friend and colleague, Dr Larry Lachman in Monterey.

The beginning of the trip was precarious because despite my best plans, a storm hit early and I had to brave sleet, snow, slush and torrential rain to get to my first destination.

Someone said it sounded like I worked for the Post Office! LOL

Last night, I stared up at the blue moon and realized that this will be a special decade.

Going into the New Year is exciting for me because I have completely recovered my health. It has been a two year journey filled with hardship and loss but the upside is that new and exciting things area on the horizon.

I got a call from a NY producer and hope to be in New York to film some more segments for Animal Planet.

The phone has been ringing with reporters and freelance writers calling for my expert opinions and I should also be doing another radio show interview shortly.

The momentum began to pick up in December and is a great shift from 2009…many of you have also faced some challenges and my wish for you is that you have a great year filled with joy, satisfaction, love and excitement to see what each day will bring.

One of the big changes is that ArkAnimals.Com will contain new posts three times a week. They will be focused more on what you’ve requested—animal training, animal behavior, and animal careers.
At the moment we are upgrading and I am traveling so look for that change about mid - January.

I will also be spending time working on the new book and the new online course I’ve been promising you for so long.

2. Discussion for the Month
===============================================
Over the years I’ve written about many issues facing animals. The good news is that I can look back and actually see change.

Recently someone was lamenting over the four million animals that face euthanasia every year but remember when it was about 15 million!

Progress in our animal care and management is what is happening—and I have to ask, are you part of that change?

For the new year I am focusing on taking my work onto the internet and into the media so I can implement change on a broader level than I can in my local community.

So, I have to ask you what are you doing for animals?

Sometimes simple actions that are all it takes to help the environment and the animals that live in it.

Below are some of the things that I am doing—I encourage you to consider taking some similar steps to impact the wellbeing of animals and the environment.

Driving Less
I retired my truck last year and have been living without a vehicle now for over a year. I take the train, carpool, walk, and occasionally rent a car if I need to. Doing so reduces emissions and has a lot of other benefits.

Recycling, Re - using, and Avoiding.
I seldom use paper towels, don’t use commercial cleaning products, use detergent without fillers, and recycle and re - use containers. I also avoid purchasing individually packaged goods, opting for buys that I can portion out in the containers I do own at home.

Donate Time.
One of the things I encourage everyone to do is to donate time to different agencies or causes. This can be done through volunteer work but also through educational efforts. If everyone donated an hour a week to something it would have a huge impact.
