Reminiscing in the Heat
She sits in the shade
of the old tin shed.
Dry heat beats
from the cyan sky
as she remembers her life, with a sigh.
The sounds of stillness in the air,
and the vibrating heat
silently overflow the paddocks,
and float to her mind
to prod and remind her
of things left behind.
She came as a girl
to wed a young man.
For years and years she had no time
to hear the silence,
to feel the heat on her head,
for she enjoyed her children instead.
Now she is aged
the young ones are gone.
In silence and stillness she sits
while familiar sounds
and the vibrating heat
lull her to sleep.
In the silence of the heat,
the stillness of the bush,
she hears their voices,
she sees bare feet -
in the vibrating heat.
