Think of the words “happy”, “successful”, “fulfilled” and “healthy”. What images come to you?

What do you need to be a soulful human being?

What does it take to be a calm and centered human being?

Do you need a roof over your head? How fancy should it be?

Do you need a good job? What job makes you happy?

Do you need a car to get around? How fancy or fuel efficient should it be?

Do you need good meals? How good? What kind?

Do you need a good laptop and a phone to feel connected?

How many friends do you need?

What are the absolute necessities in your life?

Don’t you already have them?

Why have our lives so called “necessities” increased so much lately?

Are we proportionally happier, calmer or closer to each other?

Why are there so many more “necessities” these days?

Who creates them?

For what purpose?

Are we more or less human
than decades ago
as the result of our new necessities?

Are we slaves to our new “necessities”?

“Are we slaves to our “new necessities”? Yes!

Seeing as the world moving God out of the picture
Sins and materialism are gaining much ground
And in the mean time destroying life
Due to too much stress by reason of hard worked
To take care of all the new necessities!

Oh I concur with the flavor of this writing. Most any poem of all questions is a good one to me; and your questions are equivalent to a word that means "more than appropriate," if there were such a word. I even value your introductory thought. And this great line: "Do you need good meals? How good?" emits a Ghandi-like aura.....the "How good?" part. Thank you for this. ~~ Diana

So many good question. David Carvell put it concisely this morning when he said that, “Americans have gone from being makers to buyers.” When we value ourselves in what we buy, we end up with a lot of “necessities.” But what is really necessary is much less. Advertising and the media have contributed to our dependency on “stuff.” Much of which we don't need.

I think it's safe to hold media and politics accountable for today's overly emphasized needs-syndrome. In reality, they are "wants," fueled by an exponential tidal wave of "fear" posited to keep us grasping for--as you say--happiness that is in the final consensus (at least for those of us remaining conscious) within. Thank you for the timely and insightful reminder, sprinkled with just the right amount of sub-textual discovery.
