a bit of free verse...

Knowing

I lay in solitude with closed eyes while
Outside, thunder rumbles and rolls
With the liquid sounds of a heavy
Rain, a soothing cadence
Whose rhythm
Takes me to
That odd state
Between dreams
And daydreams
Where reality can be imagined
And imagination becomes reality…

I find myself wondering, if I were to
Breathe her name, would she hear my yearning
And appear beside me full of fragrant promise?
No sooner had this question formed
Then she coalesced like dew on a flower
And in a soft rain, fell upon me
With a slow, steady rhythm…
Taking my hand, she placed
It within her heart…
Cupping it gently
I felt her pulse
And with delirious joy
Counted each beat of ecstasy.

Her soft sigh of satisfaction
Suddenly roared in my ear and I
realized, that it all was indeed real,
She had never left my side,
I was not alone.

I pulled her close and as we drifted off again to dreams
A realization glowed within my mind
Bringing a warm comfort…
As I have grown older, I have found
That the best of love
Is not in the giving
Or the receiving
But the recognizing.

Terrible thunderstorms and frightening in PA here. But we need the rain, and when I get scared, I just say listen to the angels bowling up there. We tell a small child that too and he laughs.

Thomas Wolfe once wrote that there's no knowing what is like
until you know what knowing is. You obviously know what
knowing is. You got to be there. Great poem.
