Alone. Alone with the voices and the cruel truth,
Clamoring thoughts that mock and sneer
Gone is the beauty of a life once filled
With joy and light.
It seemed to happen overnight, the descent
Into the shadows and alleyways of sin.
“Stay with me,” the siren calls, “Drink at my lips until you are
Impervious to another sound.”
Eagerly the needle is filled,
From the vial of Satan’s brew
The defenders of reason cry aloud
But the vulnerable vein has no defense
For the poison flows into the blood,
The stuff of illusion and myth.
“You must have me,” the deceiver cries
Without me, you have no life.”
And the soul shrinks back behind the bars,
Made prisoner by nothing but lies.
At midnight Paul and Silas sang,
Though beaten with many stripes
Deep within the walls of stone,
Behind the gates of iron
The angel stood with power and might,
and bade them, “Follow me.”
The chains fell off, the gates opened wide
The demons howled in fright.
Don’t give up, Oh dying soul
You are not forgotten
Truth stands before you now,
Arrayed in shining white
Just follow where He bids you go,
Through the gates of iron,
Beyond the dark and dreary walls
Of the prison bars of lies.
A Glorious day of beauty awaits,
In the arms of the Father of Lights.
