APRÈS UN RÊVE by GABRIEL FAURÉ, new translation by Joel Sattler

New Title: “After the Dream is Gone”

[this is not an exact translation, but can be called a new interpretation]

I was asleep

and saw your apparition

In my dreams happy dreams

I thought you came home

And you were happy too

With a voice pure and soaring

You were shining

Like a dawn all lit up by the morning

You called to me

To go with you forever

To the sky we’d be free

And fly together

Then the sky opened up

Opened as if holy

Splendors iridescent and lonely

And then we knew they were meant for us only

Alas alas

When I awoke from my slumber

I did call

O night take me back to my wonder

Come back come back

Radioso

Come back

O night Mysterioso…

Original lyrics in French by Romain Bussine [based on an anonymous poem of Tuscany]:

Dans un sommeil

que charmait ton image

Je revais le bonheur,

ardent message

Tes yeux etaient plus doux,

ta voix pure et sonore

Tu rayonnais

comme un ciel eclaire par l'aurore

Tu m'appelais,

et je quittais la terre

Pour m'enfuir avec toi

vers la lumiere

Les cieux pour nous

entr'ouvraient leurs nues

Splendeurs inconnues,

lueurs divines entrevues...

Helas, helas,

triste reveil des songes !

Je t'apelle,

o nuit, rends-moi tes mensonges;

Reviens,

reviens radieuse

Reviens,

o nuit mysterieuse

Lovely ~ I knew it was a sorrowful enchanting tune, but I did not even know there are words!
I play this piece on my cello quite often ~
Blessings,
Christine
