THE BALLAD OF MOBY DICK song lyrics
by Joel Sattler

the last known survivor
call me Ishmael
but still I'm alive or
this is my living hell

but it really happened
and only I can tell the tale:
the hatches were all battened
on the morning that we sailed

our captain was Ahab
they said was insane
if I'd only known that
I'd never have came

but when you sign on
sleep under the mast
you give up your choices
you give up the past

and the only voices
you hear in your sleep
are the sirens and mermaids
who sing in the deep

we sighted the monster
leviathan
on the edge of the world
the lost horizon

we knew
we were dead men
but still
we sailed on

we took up our harpoons
got into our boats
but the demon attacked
soon as we were afloat

we threw all our spears
attached to our ropes
and gave up our lives
with our hopes

the captain was mighty
he threw the last lance
even though we all knew
that we had no chance

the ship was all smashed
our voyage had failed
and I last saw the captain
on the back of the whale

Shades of The Edmonton FitzGerald! I started reading Moby Dick one time and gave up in the middle of the psychological mumbo-jumbo in the first or second chapter, I can't remember, but it doesn't matter. What matters is that I know the story, and you have captured it quite well. All it needs is a catchy tune and it could become one of the folk favorites out there that thrill us whenever we hear them.
