A moment of silence
Throughout ages,
From one civilization to the other,
A feast for the eyes,
And for the mind,
Monuments
Tower up,
Imposing and spacious,
Strong and ambitious,
Like the walls of China,
Marvelous and symmetrical,
Like the pyramids of Egypt,
Slender and magnificent,
Like the cathedrals,
Forbidden and inspiring...
Their uncommonly dimensions,
Their cohesion,
As well as
Their being
Our pride and joy,
Send us back
To the mists of time,
To the human tide,
That,
Often for nothing,
Has struggled
And worked
For the glory
Of the world masters.
From generation to generation,
Through a collection of writings
And poems,
With pomp,
They’ve sung of
These monuments
Of historical greatness,
As well as
Of their occupants
Taking pride in them:
The kings and the queens,
The Princes and the princesses,
The Knights and the nobles.
However,
In this atmosphere of joy,
Of pride
And glory,
Not a word of pity for
And
Gratitude to
Those men, women and children,
Sacrificed for
The conception
As well as
For the erection
Of these grandiose works,
Brick by brick,
Stone by stone,
Pound of cement by pound of cement.
Then,
On behalf of these anonymous people,
Let us have a moment of silence.
