Arguments

This poem was inspired by a scene from the TV program, Smash.

One of the main character's name is Karen, her boyfriend is yelling at her because she just told him she had been sexually harassed at work and she still works for the same guy. She wants him to recognize that she is an adult and in charge of her own life and to trust that she can handle the situation, which obviously he doesn’t.

ARGMENTS

She said. “You’re yelling at me,”
but it didn’t seem to matter,
still he kept on yelling
as she got madder and madder.

Saying, “Go yell at someone else,”
she headed for the door.
He hesitated for a moment,
then he yelled some more.

She slammed the door behind her,
heading for who knows where,
but wherever she was going,
she knew he wouldn’t be there.

Arguments happen often
and making up can be lots of fun,
but when arguing gets really nasty
it can never be un-done.

A look of exasperation
came upon his face
as slowly his chances faded
to get back into her good grace.

Their story will continue,
but likely the relationship will fold.
though predicting a woman’s mind,
I would never be so bold.

Life goes on around us,
join in, if you will.
It’s a never ending journey,
always, it seems,,, up hill.

don't watch much tv maybe that's why my relationship has lasted 44 years with few fights in-between ...

Eileen insinuates that I am bossy. I don't see it most times. We've only had a couple of real quarrels in the past 20 years. We don't like them. Patrick

I would never watch something called “Smash” because it implies that it is. And that means that it probably is not. I can't think of anything duller than a TV argument like the ones I see on “ Survivor” and “The Amazing Race.” Frankly, I could do without all the arguing that goes on, but I guess a certain segment of the audience wants to see it. If the arguments were taken out, I think the shows would be a lot better.

Haven't watched the show, but your poem could describe so many couples I know....Nicely done, Richard...sometimes its amazing where inspiration comes from...you just never know...

Playful writing of a serious topic. The tempo of this was so consistent that it was fun to reread out loud. Stanza 3 is my favorite in here...it shows and tells so much. Thanks! ~~ Diana

It is fairly common to argue with someone you care about, I think the trick though is never to say anything that you would not say when you are not mad at each other...some words just can't be taken back.

Oh, I don't know! My parents argued with each other and stayed together for 52 years. I believe they had mastered the art of forgiving. Amazing!!

Love ya!

I agree, Dick, once you pass a certain point even if you make up and cement the new union with fantastic sex, that point passed will rear its ugly head in future discussions. Yep. Sometimes it is just best to consider this particular lovers nest ruined forever and start looking around, hopefully you will have learned something from the loss.
