A name not common
to folks nowadays
one you quickly identify as
Indian
Native American or
American Indian
all of which
I am not.
I belong to
no such labels.
Indians are from India.

I am not native
to this thing called
America
for it, too, is
only a label given
by Wasichu.
You are Native American
by birthright
whether you're African,
Indian, Asian or white
you are Native American.

I am Native
to this Turtle Island
not only by birthright
but by the
blood of my people
that flows
through the veins
of this land
the blood of
my Great Grandfathers
Sitting Bull and Powhatan
and my Great Grandmother
Pocahontas

The same blood
that allows you
to build your high rises
and sit in your
fine diners
the same blood that
is the very heartbeat
of my people
that beats through me.

And when you hear
my name Red Bear
you will know
I am your heartbeat.

Great poem and I love the music. Here in the UK we have 'labelling' too. Filling in a form recently Jim came to the section asking what ethnic group we belonged to, he just wrote 'none of your damn business.'
Just what has it got to do with anything anyway. Jackie <> <

It is strange what we all label each other. In Europe someone said the word "Negro" --I said "Those are fighting words in the states" --I hate "white"--I'm not white-- I'm a friggin MUTT! :) Seriously, I read your poem and though "What have we done to each other as people by doing THIS?" Definition of this: the labels we give one another

Your depth is something for classic literature books. You wow me! I never get tired of coming over here to read you.

Thank You,
Teresa Emilie

Good write, Carolyn. You're absolutely right. It's like if we don't fit into pigeonholes, we don't fit in at all. I was born in Argentina. Have been a naturalized citizen of this Country for over 45 years. I'm still ailionated by many -- I speak a little differetly than most. And I get the questions all the time: How can I be a Native of Argentina with an Italian surname? Like people didn't travel and settled anywhere else but here. The real confusion comes when I say that my mother's family was from Spain. And where do the blue eyes come from? And am I really white? And I hate it when they call me Spanish. Just like you say: Spanish come from Spain. There comes the point when we must say: I am.

Thanks for this.
