As we prepare for the 2009 Hurricane Season, beginning tomorrow and running through November 30th, I wanted to reflect upon my memories of last September's Hurricane Ike --- a storm that changed our house and my life, forever.
|
I watched the seas swell o’er the shore
I eyed the wrath, firsthand
I grieved as Ike came through the door
Of my beloved homeland
I sifted through mounds of debris
I prayed for friends we lost
Ike left a lasting legacy
At such a painful cost.
I saw our roof slowly give way
I made a million calls
I found the will to face the day
Without a floor and walls
I stared upon a pile of trash
Junk that had once been treasure
Its value gone within a flash
Thanks to Ike’s night of pleasure.
I smiled when the workers arrived
Each step a victory
I trudged ahead, though sleep deprived
This was my destiny
Despite my losses, I endured
I fared better than most
Now looking back, I’m reassured
By the strength of our coast.
Although in hardship, hope was near
Courage was known to all
Compassion for our plight was clear
Our faith was standing tall
Once more, neighbors stood arm in arm
Each lent a helping hand
Ike came aground, hell bent to harm
But, on this shore I stand!
I have Ike’s scars, the scars run deep
Though faded, here they’ll stay
Ike’s lessons are memories I’ll keep
Until my judgment day
I watched the seas swell o’er the coast
Our lives were torn apart
But, from Ike, I learned what mattered most
The love within the heart.

Such a painful cost - the loss of friends, the near loss of your home (is that from your living room? Talk about skylights - holysmoke), but counted blessings - tough times, and you emerge stronger, able to look back, while looking towards the future - very well penned, Jill, it is an honor to know you, a survivor in every sense of the word.
(((HUGS))) and love, Karla. |
