Tuesday evening, June 23, 2009, Houston Police Officer, Henry Canales was killed by an assailant during an undercover operation Officer Canales was working. The officer leaves behind a wife and two children. I share this poem as comfort to his family, his friends, and the community.

The sun is shining much dimmer today
An officer has lost his life
Our sadness and grief, too immense to say
We mourn for his children and wife
Protecting the public was his destiny
Each day, he proudly served in blue
He sacrificed all, so we could be free
He was a hero -- tried and true
Just a common man when we passed on the street
He answered to a higher call
An everyday hero, when he walked the beat
A friend and a comrade to all
He made the most of each day that he shared
Someone who never knew regret
His true sense of duty cannot be compared
His commitment we won’t soon forget
Together we join, in our darkest hour
Forever our hearts will behold
A child of God, with a strong sense of valor
A servant with a soul of gold
An officer who gave much more than himself
His legacy shall never cease
An angel called Home to God’s glory and wealth
A hero now resting in peace

To a brave man which "to serve and protect" weren't just words.
A magnificent tribute to a magnificent human being.
