In the old districts of Madrid
|
This double - barrelled helix,
an ancient Spanish stairway,
Its wood greyer than street dust
with bandaged banisters, spirals
As a monstrous thorax throttled
on each gargantuan gargoyle floor
towards a vaulted glass dome sky.
Across a courtyard of piled debris,
Half hung brown ramshackle shutters
On paint flaked wood window doors,
Rust wrought iron verandas & stained
Facades, an unbelievable Gurnica light
Bulb suspends in a naked window against
The night. A white electric cell stormed
In the head of a whale that flounders,
Crashes onto the street of harlot shouts.
A spring moon appears above an open
Auditorium full on to a surreal film,
Where a French courtesan in sex & sin
Dies over & over again in the dreams
Of sick apes & their silent screams.

| Robin, you are a master of congruous imagery and juxtapositioning ... a compelling poem capturing the mood and ambiance of the psyche's celluloid ... |

Ah! a portrait penned as the master of cubisim would have wanted. This is a triumphant piece of Avant-garde Robin. You paint the scene in such brilliant visuals...it makes me want to re-live my sojourns into modernism. So much so, it's inspired me to dig out some of my modernist essays. I may even watch Salo lol...certainly the best thing I've read in a long while. Outstanding!

A crucible of the goods, Robin! This is what the gargoyle deities have wrought, practicing pagan rites where gargoyles are multiple, animal/human sacrifices are expected, and beer is the sacred beverage of the spring moon at the film room...

And so your pen captures nuances of realism and surrealim like the artform to which your title alludes. Mesmerizing to witness this waltz between irony and pathos. An altogether visually compelling and stylistically engaging work.

Excellent, intensely visual work that flows effortlessly and sets a mood in time that is inescapable. While my critique is entirely subjective, this work is among the best I have ever read here.
