Once I was a butterfly.
Before I spread
My wings to fly,
I was just
A big, fuzzy,
Ugly green caterpillar
That crawled along tree limbs,
Eating leaves, bugs and things.
One day
I went in
This glorious cocoon I'd spun.
When I stepped out
A few days later,
I'd become something else --
A beautiful blue butterfly.
As I readied myself
For my first flight,
My wings flapping
Upon the light breeze,
I was caught
By hands I did not know.
After being admired for a moment,
They let me go, saying,
"Be free, little butterfly,
You're not for me.
If you were,
You'll come back to me."

I love poems that tell stories and this one does that extraordinarily well, in my opinion. Love the way it ends- great symbolism of love!

| Butterfly spirits do come back to us. Read my Tom's little Butterfly poem on my site. It is that I saw a blue butterfly and it landed on my shoulder and went to the front steps as I came out of car from his service, never to be seen yet again. I got good reviews on it and it is a memorable moment for me and encouraged me to write. God's little secret gets around to us by ways of the butterfly. |

sweet analogy, for it is hard for even the coldest heart not to want to see a butterfly in careless untethered flight on a sunny day...
