Doing What We Can

Doing What We Can

Midnight on my second job-

First one starts at dawn-

Looking for a smile to rob-

No one mowed the lawn.

She’s not waiting up for me-

Took another man-

Life’s not what it’s meant to be…

Doing what we can.

Funny I have all this love-

Only wanted her,

What could she be thinking of?

After what we were.

Have to say- I’ve got my son,

Guess that was the plan-

Thought for sure she was the one…

Doing what we can.

Have to turn the page somehow-

Put it all away,

That was then and this is now-

Living for today.

This is life I’ve come to learn,

I’m just not a fan-

Only taking what I earn…

Doing what we can.

Broken hearts are all the rage-

All the good ones too…

Only harder as we age-

What’s a guy to do?

Move along the lonely road-

Dash across the span-

Wonder not the love I’m owed…

Doing what we can.

Got a chance to get this right-

Second time around…

Got another fish to bite-

How does this one sound?

Seems to see a heart of gold-

Not an also ran…

Start to smile as we grow old…

Doing what we can.

So difficult to lose a loved one, especially to someone else.

Glad you did not give it up and throw it on a shelf.

Love it John! Broken hearts hurt a lot, but they are really just fractured. Sometimes they take along time to heal, but recovery is quicker when a pretty fish is court!
Reeling in the line.

Sometimes it is not the first love that is the most special and endearing to our hearts but the last one for that is the one we will cross the finish line with.

A sad one, John, but a hopeful ending. Good writing.

You sound so sad as this journey continues, but sometimes "doing what we can" is all that we have left....

Be always safe,

Wonderful ~ I enjoyed the clean lines of this one, and although twined in sadness, it ends with hope.
