samhain, 11/1

dancing amid flames
bidding summer fond farewell
~fires of samhain

©2009 Joseph* ~ OneLight*®

The Irish word Samhain is derived from the Old Irish samain, samuin, or samfuin, all referring to 1 November (latha na samna: 'samhain day'), and the festival and royal assembly held on that date in medieval Ireland (oenaig na samna: 'samhain assembly').  Its meaning is glossed as 'summer's end'.   The term "Samhain" derives from the name of a month in the ancient Celtic calendar, in particular the first three nights of this month, with the festival marking the end of the summer season and the end of the harvest.  Principally a harvest festival, it also has aspects of a festival of the dead.  It had its roots in ancient Celtic polytheism, and continued to be celebrated through medieval times, and is seen as contributing to the modern celebration of Halloween.  Many scholars believe that it was the beginning of the Celtic year.

" Its meaning is glossed as 'summer's end'." If you go outside here, you know summer has ended. Good work, Joseph, happy Sunday to you.
