“All by myself, I don't want to be

All by myself...anymore;

All by myself, I don't want to live,

All by myself...anymore.”

Celine Dion, All By Myself

Scientists recently tracked a solitary turtle

That journeyed 13,000 miles in search of food

It traveled all the way from Indonesia to Oregon

Yet many still believe the state of the Earth is good

Today, the leatherback turtle is extremely endangered

It’s also the oldest and the largest turtle on planet Earth

Once, there were hundreds of thousands of leatherbacks

And soon, they may be gone, leaving me with little mirth

We continue to pollute Earth’s oceans at an astounding rate

And as we overfish its waters, they become entangled in our nets

They also very often mistake our floating plastic garbage for food

Causing far too many of these ancient mariners to meet their deaths

Massive new beach erosion and our never ending modern urban sprawl

Have now left the female leatherback fewer places to lay its eggs in nests

I wish this stoic old seafarer much luck in finding some food and company

And I mourn the decline of another ancient Earth species, one of its very best

Leatherback Turtles have been on Earth,

For at least the last 110 million years;

And very soon, they will vanish forever;

I wonder how many of us will shed a tear

¯

Balloons, plastic bags, styrofoam, and other garbage

Floating in the water can all be mistaken as food;

And these ancient mariners die a horrible death,

When our callous human trash blocks their intestines.

And in some parts of the ocean today,

There are six pounds of plastic,

Per pound of fish.

It has now been estimated

That our ocean garbage today,

Horrifically kills over 100,000

Innocent sea mammals and turtles

Each and Every Year.

Wow!!!! I cant believe all the devastation. It seems like no animal can find peace anymore. Just another stroy to add to future school books. The leatherback turtle extinction know isnt that a great title for something to learnaobut. I cant belive people still contiue to pollute the oceans and dont the see the problem to their ways. Traveling from Indonesia to Oregan for food is such a big sign that something is worng but who sees that only the ones who care.

You know, I am beginning to believe we are all in trouble, not just the animals. It seems we and the animals of this world are being calculatively being picked off one by one, but not enough to make the nightly news. What a sad world we have created and I am not sure if there is still time to reverse all the harm that has been done.

Be always safe,
Karen

A touching write...I teach about the leatherback turtle each year when I teach about ocean life. The kids are always intrigued by the pictures of this wonderful and ancient creature. I always try to instill within their minds about the urgency of keeping our earth land and water clean, and about not polluting, and encourage them to pass the word along to family and friends. I enjoy working with them in our local PRIDE program, picking up litter, recycling, and much more...I try to do my part...small but an effort nevertheless. Great write my friend!

Don't get overly sad. Leatherbacks are alive and kicking in our shores, as are many other marine life you'd not expect to see here.

Hate to say it ole chum, but if you guys would sign up, you'd have to clean your waters like we do and have..... As you know America's pollution counts for 2/3 of the worlds pollution, our 2% help keeps getting rubbed out by our greedy and ruthless uncle.

I can see a future where the world will get overly angry with our uncle, in need to save the planet. $ is god to so many. The other place where anger is mounting is against Japan. Mr Bush has made America hated in the world. Everyday Americans are tops, yet are clueless about this. Well 141 countries blame America for such a crises....

This brings back memories of The Turtle Lady - Ila Loetscher (1905-2000), of South Padre Island, TX. She single-handedly brought great attention to the plight of Sea Turtles...you may have seen her on Johnny Carson Show, and Dave Letterman show. Her efforts of personally caring, healing (in her back yard), and returning turtles to the Gulf resulted in the formation of Sea Turtle, Inc.

You're contributing greatly, too, Ed with your educating poetry and articles on the plight of our wonderful land and sea creatures! Bless you...

Ed I saw where plastic is the worst of the problems since it can't be digested, besides all the other dangers it causes. I'm always flabbergasted trying to understand why our scientists and leaders ,besides all the rest of the populace, can't find an alternative for garbage,than the ocean! Are they just plain indifferent, or so greedy they don't give a damn that we're killing our planet! I find it horrific the waste that is thrown into the ocean,it's an abomination, God won't forget!

We are sooooo dumb,,, I don't understand,, even when the snow melts the litter along freeways and roads is ridiculous, some just don't have the respect for our land and sea,,, and it is just not right to be killing off the turtle,, and other creatures. This should be on every front page of every newspaper.
