“Keep close to Nature’s heart,
And break away once in awhile.
Wash your spirit clean.
None of Nature’s landscapes are ugly,
So long as they are wild.”
John Muir
Music: The Journey
I told my spouse that I was leaving
A desire had overcome me, to camp
I soon began packing up all of my gear
Bedroll, cooking stove, food, and lamp
“You are not going camping now Mister,
You just brought a very wild dog home!
I suppose you expect me to care for him,
While in those woods of yours you roam!”
“I won’t be gone too long, I promise!”
I kissed her good-bye, and I was gone
But I knew that she would soon forgive me
When she let our dogs out, the next dawn
They all came racing to the kennel out back
They all sniffed the air, and started to whine
When my wife saw me, camped in the kennel
She couldn’t help but laugh for a very long time
“Hi Sweetie! Shadow and I had a wonderful night,
I decided that camping with him will help him trust.
Wanna join us for breakfast back here, in the wild?
I’m about to make bacon and eggs, for the two of us.”
My spouse just kept laughing, proclaiming I was insane
But I know of no better way to bond, then to camp here
Although Shadow has not yet snuggled up on my bedroll
I can tell my plan is working, he no longer trembles in fear
We've made some steady progress since his arrival here
He already knows that I’m not going to harm or abuse him
He’s also been observing that my dogs are not afraid of me
Hopefully, as each day passes, more of his trust, we can win
