“A man may smile and bid you hail,
Yet wish you to the devil;
But when a dog wags his tail,
You know he's on the level.”

It’s been three weeks since I found him
Lying there, in his hell, on that highway
He has now had surgery on his broken leg
And his health is slowly improving each day
Each time that I would visit him at the hospital
He would shower me with kisses and tail wags
Dogs never try to hide their emotions like we do
It is fairly easy to see when they are happy or sad
Even though his leg is bandaged, and he wears a cone
He does not complain, or curse, or so very rudely shout
He and I went for a little walk around the animal hospital
And he was extremely appreciative, just to be alive and out
And soon, he hobbled over to my old truck in the parking lot
He looked at me, as if he hoped we were now going for a spin
So I opened the door, and he eagerly hobbled onto the back seat
As we drove off, he rejoiced in the open window, face in the wind
Highway’s recovery will now take another four to six difficult weeks
But he’s not complaining, he’s just glad to be alive and on the mend
Canines always teach me, to accept whatever life has in store for us
And until I die, I hope that these lessons from canines will never end
“The more one gets to know of men,
The more one values dogs.”
