My Friend
I don't ask much, only that you except
What I extend.
After all, isn't that an important part
Of being a friend?
I can't honestly say I want nothing
In return from you,
For I'd be lying if I denied
I need to be needed too.
I laugh with you; cry with you,
And share so much of what you do.
We are connected, yet separate;
Living individually,
But bonded by more than we view.
Yet, I wonder if you trust anyone
Enough to open your heart---
or have all the battles made you feel alone---
So retreating is safer
Than another start?
Please, dear friend, don't keep your fears from my eyes,
Don't tell me what I want to hear---I don't want lies.
I'm never going to be perfect, but I will allow you inside
To all the facets that make me who I am---
As long as you don't hide,
And to the same principles abide.
