With Your Own Kind

A smoked filled room
A dim soft light
Someone coughs
and there is a clink of
a metal spoon touching
a chipped porcelain cup
The smell of coffee in the air
and a 100 eyes look up,
focusing on you
as you stand to read your poem.
You are among friends
You are with your own kind.

Nervous you begin
to perform
to recite
to feel
to give
the thing that makes you feel so alive
It is more than a rush
Better than any kind of an affair
you could be accused of having
and you can relate so much
because it’s poetry night
at the Midnight Expresso Café
and you are there
with your own kind…

Nice piece. You are a brave soul. I know from sitting on the sidelines that open mics can be addictive (maybe its something they put in the coffee or maybe its just the positive energy).

Caryn has caught the ambience that Joan Cates, Midnight Expresso Cafe owner, has been creating for years. If ever in Jax come see us to listen or read your work. Bravo Suarez she speaks for all of us that need to be with "our own kind." Thanks, Lynn & Joan
