Even when we know someone is not good for us, we still sometimes vacillate in deciding whether to leave them or stay.

The poet rides recessive tides/
tangled in regret-filled thoughts/
stuck between hope & despair/
torn between yore & fresh air.....

My take? - The poet should seek the solution offering the best opportunity for future happiness for themselves and any dependents.
