Tree

we cut down a tree today.
and in between the sweat, and the scratches
and the aching backs…
I learned about her favorite flavors,
her favorites flowers,
and how simple it can be
to talk directly
 to someone’s heart…

we cut down a tree today
and in between the sunburn,
and the bug bites
we listened to my music,
while we talked about her dreams
we planned a meal together
and talked about my fears
and we thanked god for friendships
and the lessons, finally learned…

we cut down a tree today
and in between the trimming and the dragging
and the fumes and the noise
I met a beautiful woman
wrapped around a little girl
and I felt like a towering lumberjack
with a schoolboy crush
as we talked about
goodness,
and fairness
regrets and resolutions
and why people do the things they do…

we cut down a tree today
and while one life ended
we sowed the seeds
of something
so much stronger
and I'm hoping
it lives
for
a long, long time..

we cut down a tree today.

The Gentle-Man

I like the way the tree seems to represent not the ending of something, but the beginning.
