The Nights of New Orleans

I wrote this poem several years ago about the Big Easy. New Orleans lived like a city existing on borrowed time, her system of levies protecting her all these years. But time came a'calling. I can't believe what has become of her...what her nights have become.

Yellow lights throw pale shadows everywhere
Hiding strangers who chance to meet
Like the music that sweeps her streets
Escaping from each brightly-colored door at all times

Pitch and tone jib from block to block but never its flavor
Like eating gumbo in the rain
Each bite different, but the same
Escaping from palates dulled by culinary crimes

Strangely familiar, darkly illuminating
Giving shelter from the storm
Giving comfort to the worn
Escaping to the nights when New Orleans shines

Excellent portrayal of what New Orleans was. Let's pray that it can be that way again only revamped, restructured and rebuilt the way it should have been before Katrina hit. The world is seeing what poverty breeds and we are too rich of a Nation to continue to not deal with these types of problems and issues...as I am sure we all see and feel the backlash of what could have been avoided in this great Country.
