I stood, Berlin's Wall, years ago
Iron guards, death strips, mines in rows
Slow death throes before end game
For some, just a lost line in time
Accepted memorial to crime
That chained climb to freedom’s flame
Tempers, rude words always cause
Urge to set steel jaws, close ways
Within old fear's radius
E pluribus unum blaze
Hadrian piled martyred stone
Against hope, he’d hold islands owned
Wide rock, limestone roads’ long reach
Rome tried to ride out Caesar’s rale
Mortared curtain could not curtail
Gray rampart’s veil was breached
Granite borders at last failed
Princes quailed, empires caught
Fell in holy razor wire
Fast bled tired from vain wars fought
Hushed whispers flee across dark sands
Eagle’s tears, insistent demands
Reprimands for wrongs long claimed
Made uneasy by angered minds
Justice that casts rights far behind
New fences, blind lash at blame
