My White Caddy
by Sherri Smith

Friday, May 19, 2006
Rated "G" by the Author.

What freedom meant when I was 16.

Snow white fenders, sparkling in the sun, roomy light blue interior, built like a tank.

Oh how I loved that Car!!  It meant one thing to me:

         F--R--E--E--D--O--M

Freedom from babysitting my younger sisters, freedom from evading my stepdad's groping hands, freedom from Mom'sheadaches and moods.

My girlfriends and I would pool our money, put some gas in the tank head for the main drag.

Windows down, radio tuned to Chicago's WLS,

Simging along with 'Soldier Boy,' 'Surfin USA,'

I would crank it up when the Four Seasons sang:

"Sherri, Sherri baby, Sherri...won't you come out tonight."

I laughed in that car; cried in that car, I read love letters from Viet Nam and I wrote letters back using the dashboard as a desk.

Dreams were dreamed, confidences shared and fears faced in that white Caddy.

When that Caddy was sold for $50, a little part of me went with it.

It didn't matter that it was pulled from a junk yard, or the doors flew open when I went around the corner,

I just had the friendliest car in town --it waved at everyone!

It was mine, It helped me to discover a different

                                 ME

I will always love that '55 Caddy, the one I drove in '67.

Hi,

I also have a purple Caddy and I also wrote a poem about it. I will miss it if I let it go. Do you have any advice?

Thanks for sharing...

I loved my 1962 Champagne colored convertible, a Ford XL and it was so joyful to take off with my cousin and go to parks and Gettysburg, PA and all. We rode many a days around the town in it. Now I have a blue Chevy Corsica 1996 and I love it just as well. It gets me where I want to go in my old age too. HOpe it keeps running well.

Such sweet memories, Sherri. I hated my first car and only had it for four months but the second one was great although it was no Caddy. Thank for sharing the memories. Love and peace,

Regis

Ah sweet memories of doing your own thing and having the freedom to do it in your White Caddy. I will be sad when I will have to give up my freedom to drive and go where I want, when I want.
