Sometimes it is the not belonging/possessing that hurts the most... that knowledge that in essence you don't have a right to mourn the absence of someone or something because the feelings you have were never returned. Maybe all of that doesn't make any sense... :~)

Such painful emotions in so few words...how beautifully expressed, Kate. I understand these feelings: Cotton-candy, once sweet, now sticks to the palate; just a button does not allow closure; living things lost do not exclude death. We feel, we give, we share, but never allowed possession...so many expressions of our life's journey...and so well penned, dear friend.

To possess one's soul is only done when you find that true soul mate, they become so much a part of you that it isn't possession but residence. Your soul lives inside of his soul. Never can that be broken. Even when soul mates depart from each other, pieces still remain for eternity. That is why we search in every lifetime to find those missing pieces to once again reside inside of that sanctity of our soul mate. Wow, deeply responding to this poem, not sure why but these words are just flowing from me. You inspired me, Kate, that's a good thing..lol
Much peace, love, and light,

Kate,
The structure matters so much here, the eliminations (as Axilea refers to) in the first three stanza half and the focus on what is in the second three-part half; but on top of that the parts are more than a sum, they are an entire feeling and response...loss, pain and trying to cope.

It's interesting to begin like this, by eliminating the small detail, the more obvious, the sweet memory. "It" all seems to be concentrated in the loss and in the absence.

Oh Kate this one is so painfully sweet that it aches for a kind word or a soft touch. When we are in love with someone we find special comfort in such simple things as a favorite picture, a ticket stub from a movie shared, or yes even a button or article of clothing. Love is a special blessing whether it be for a week, a month or forever it should be treasured and remembered always and you captured that will in this poem my dear Kate/well done.
