Why Texas

If you ask us why we feel the way we do

About a land that takes as much as it gives,

A simple shrug, a steady gaze, and words that are too few.

The answer's not that simple, it's more than where we live.

It's fighting all the elements of wind, rain and weather,

That builds our pride and breaks our backs,

And brings us all together.

It's hard to explain without all the facts.

Texas is more than just a piece of land

It's like a mighty oak, that stretches far and wide

It's roots grow deep,as it touches the soul of man.

Texas is a mighty tree, that God placed by our side.

But still, it's the Alamo that whispers a haunting, daunting sigh

In our hearts, we remember what happened here

How the men of many nations said, "For Texas we will die!"

Perhaps that's the very reason we hold this state so dear!

Joined the Air Force to travel, put Alaska on my dream sheet. Six weeks basic, six weeks AIT, I'd be on my way there, or so I thought: nope. Came to Texas, never left. 25 years later, still here ... sigh.

Never say never (during the massive heat wave y'all had in 1980, I was living in Utah. Every day on the news, they'd update the number of people who died because of the extreme temps: looked at my brother, said, "I will NEVER. Live in Texas." Famous last words!!)

You're right about the weather and the pride of these fine people: well done.

(((HUGS))) and love, Karla.

Still wouldn't mind Alaska. =]

I often ask myself that very question. I moved here from Ohio, and I am not really fond of Texas! LOL

Good write, though!
