Rarely is a poem ever about one person, one thing, a sure thing, or woven with moods unsubject to change.

Almost I opened...
I am that bud craving the caress of a gifted gardener.
Who longs to see these petals unfold?
The weeds choke me and my thorns sharpen
on stones rising around my stem.
Crows brought these and each day deliver more stones in bleak assortment that
weigh heavier and heavier against my worm-chewed leaves.
Wall of stones rising to entomb me...
Almost I opened as I could open only for you, but
you are not the gardener; you are but another passing through.
Drought lingers and since no one ventures along this path to see my
scarlet petals' fading glow, I grow content to
twist and tighten, fading and unopened 'til the last stone's cast on curls,
until unfurling's a dead endeavor and morning dew
kisses only stone along the well-worn path.

My god, Nordetten, how you can absorb me into, not just a piece, itself, but into the expressions of it, the poetry of it... sometimes, I just collapse, entirely, marveling at your very human, very brave insights.

Oh, yes, I do what we commenters love to say, "relate"... but, with this one and so many of yours, I'm stunned more by the writing. I can see and feel the agonizing metaphors you offer. You, dear madam, are a poet's poet, indeed. katy xox

If we wait for the tending hand of the gardener, surely we will all wilt upon the vine...or was that the knight in shining armor...no matter, the end result is the same. Excellent metaphor-rich verses, Nordette. Awesome work!
Take care,

IN ALL SINCERITY, WISDOM, paints romantic tragedy on such a grand scale that it stands shoulder to shoulder with some of the best romantic poetry ever written. Its power comes beautifully from its brave visualization of failed hope and desire even while the soul of the poem itself continues to sing the significance of its virtually unbearable pain. A small and very worthy masterpiece by a giant and masterful talent.

Nordette,

Exquisite longing. You trap your metaphors so expertly, so cunningly, that they don't even know that they're caught. If this is allegorical (and I suspect it is - after all - we write what we know), it is not prophecy. Surely one with your fathomless depth knows that a gardener will be along shortly.

Peace,

B

Well, hell and say it again! Very astute observations AND just a damn fine write with so many metaphors the poem was like licking a triple-decker strawberry ice cream, or a cherry snow cone. The irony is heavy and oppressive and bears down upon the reader as you slowly begin to understand that the lonely bud is waiting in vain for that gardner. Superb writing, Nordette..
