My name is Smartie
I am a cat
At an early age
I refused to move with my owner
from a house, with a yard
to an apartment
that felt like a prison to me
I walked many miles back to that yard
for to be confined simply was too hard
In the end, I was abandoned twice
I just couldn't give up my freedom
at any price
Some people call me Alley Cat
Some call me Stray
To them I'd say:
I am a free spirit
An Independent soul
Your ancestors cherished mine
We Cats have been revered
long before your time
To most of you
we remain an enigma
Some of you fear us and
wish us away
But you might want to think of this:
We keep your mice, rats, bugs at bay
Occasionally, we even tackle a snake
We patrol your area
long before you are awake
Some of us have homes
to which we return
for shelter and food and warmth
But many of us must survive
all on our own
We starve often
We're freezing in winter
hiding below your porch
We're thirsting in summer
And must fight our foes
Many of us don't live long
for we must beware
natural predators
always there
We must dodge fast cars
on our walks and strolls
Usually we just move along
on our routine patrols
Humans say we should be killed
For they are afraid of us and our offspring
That is very sad
My own human got to know me
I let her see my personality
She admires me daily
for she can see
my intelligence, my patience, and grace
For that I love her..I chose her, you see
We've gone through many adventures
Crises and problems and dangers too
I've brought her food, protected her
and given her comfort and love
I've forgiven her for all her mistakes
And when she watches me snuggle to a perfect nap
When she knows me well fed...
She has no regret...
Whenever a 'homeless' cat or kitten is trapped and killed, it is a sad day in Heaven and a worse day in Hell.
