They say, Life goes on
And so it does
But as twilight descends
Shadows darken
To the memories left
Of loved Ones long gone:
Father's hands at work
Ever filling canvas after canvas
With creations of beauty
Well after eye sight began to fail
Mother's hands never idle
Never failing to offer comfort
Her mind shrewd to the end
Sister's laughter, hearty and loud
Her brilliant gentian eyes hiding
Her critical thoughts
But not her passionate soul
Grandparents in their garden
Cucumber salad fragrant with dill
He weeding and tending flowers
She hanging wet laundry
To dry beneath the blue sky
The First Doggie
A wonderful pet
Companion on walks
Through the city, into the park
The Second Dog, a Shepherd
Of intelligence and loyalty
Hard to compare
As darkness falls
The visions fade
The moon, the stars
Shine upon a saddened face
Raised to their eternal presence...
They witnessed it all
The laughter, the smiles
The struggles, the cares
They've remained aloof
Yet there, with their promise
Of yesterdays turning into morrows.
Spirits float upon silvery clouds
Snow draws a chill blanket
Over roofs, over lawns
Day belongs to the living
But at midnight the great Owl watches
From his seat on the old oak's branch
He rules the night.
With respect, I salute him
As I salute those who rule my thoughts.
