Travellin' Men
The rooms are the same.
Different places,
different times,
...but still the same.
The distance is far,
the next block,
the next country.
...if it's away from love.
It is difficult,
this life that they hate,
this life that they love.
..the life of the travellin' men.
Baxley, Witchita, Lycoming,
the names of places.
Places near and far.
...all have known their tread.
The triumphs and defeats.
Make the sale,
or the presentation.
...is it reward enough?
The rooms are the same,
Different places,
different times,
...but still the same.
The bars are the same,
some small,
some large,
..but still the same.
The people laugh
and seem happy
all are lonely,
...or soon to be.
The ones like us,
by themselves
are the saddest.
...the travellin' men.
Most take what they can get,
the girls are willing,
they beckon with come hither eyes,
...but some am not.
What they have is too precious,
to good,
to risk for a moments pleasure
..with a stranger.
Just a warm fire,
a smooth drink,
and my darling.
...are all that they need.
It is difficult, this life
this life that they hate,
this life that they love,
...the life of the travelin' men.
