~ A Fort In Time ~

Long shadows

cling to darkened walls

hushed in the depth of time

sit ghostly memories

woven in tapestries of peace and war

burnt oak scents waft

from a fireplace, long cold

amenities few

needs by choice had the voice

nothing frivolous had been secured

armament racks held long guns

 light from a southern sky

slices through a window

in shadows wide, rough hewn beams

secure the ceiling

where quartered were conscripts

the fort’s gray sandstone walls

standing between two bastions

 formidable at discouraging

unwanted entry

through the French and Indian wars

our nation’s battle for independence

a bloody civil war

she served them well throughout

periods interrupted by riotous hell

now in silent testament she serves

as a historical reminder of war’s spoils

life ending struggles

the terminus for many

ground hallowed by those that fell

choosing to defend, life and liberty

on the frontier of tomorrow’s dreams

her walls weep the tears

of many sorrows

let us hold her memory long

and honor her part in

 freedom’s resounding song

There are so many monuments that hold the very memories of the past, your thoughts within this collaboration finds us within the wings carried by so many who have given to the creation of a country built on freedom...

very nice...

A collaboration that took me back to the corridors of San Francisco's Presidio, to other epochs, to other people, to another history.
Your poems honors even those that many forgot.
A remarkable poem!

Carole and Jon,
Another well written and strong collaboration. I don't know enough about American history - my loss - but I don't need to in this context as the poem stands on its own merits. Well done, both of you!

Carole and Jon did a beautiful tribute here to a place but also to a breed of men who stood up when they were asked to step forward to do whhat had to be done....

And, I seconded each word by my friend, Gene, who knows a well covered piece of writing. This poem makes me want to jump up and cheer for we have forgotten too much of our gaining independence and liberty to govern ourselves. Bravo times thousands! - Bill

Those silent forts are mute testimony to who we were
and how we got to be who we are. Ignoring the voices
that may acuse me of flattery in the hope of obtaining
a flattered response to my own postings, I need to say
again, Carole and Jon, how much I admire the highly
disciplined skill of your ongoing collaborations. -gene.
