Outside the Box

Outside the Box

we each have a perception of normal

within our own space

the ones closest to us

have this preconceived concept

of who we should be

to fit into our box

they emotionally avoid

mentally feel uncomfortable

when our horizons expand

becoming more than expected

children place parents into this box

never consider, nor want them to be

more than who they expect to see

assuming that great expectations

belong only to the young

will they see the greater truth

emotions, ambitions and dreams

have no age barriers

we may suppress or hide them

but they never die

when it is too late to change

they may find a box filled with your words

in journals or poems

a voice they never heard

do they finally realize

the parts of you they never knew

or will that occur when they become

the older parent

the one in the box looking up

wondering why

no one see them outside of the box

Your words make an uncanny appraisal of thinking outside the box. Perhaps,, if we make sure our contacts read your poem, they will leave us be, huh? Good work, my friend. - Bill

perception, is it truth or is it deception -- no, it is the order of comfort we consciously predispose everything to -- right or wrong, it is human nature -- what a waste of imagination -- what burdensome reins to place upon anyone or anything -- "Outside the Box" are so many marvelous things to share and see -- take the blinders from me that I might see -- very philosophical, yet so very pragmatic -- a delicious blend Carole -- and an important reminder to us all -- from within the box, be free -- peace and love my friend -- Jon Michael

Love this meditative and reflective write, Carole, expertly crafted and so well thought-through. Superb progression through your ideas and very provocative in the right sense! I think my family have long since quit trying to cram me back into any kind of box these days; it's easier for them to just let me run wild! :)) xx

Nice work Carole, we are all more than even we realize, and at times the look from outside the box does not expose us...it is the inner exposure that defines us and sometimes we don't realize it till we are older and reflect back...

nice work...

Carole,
A brilliant opening leads to a great poem: intelligent, thoughtful, wise and compelling. This is very fine indeed.

For some children, that box have a name, Pandora. It should be let alone, even if dying of curiosity.

Powerfully, poignantly penned, Carole - well done. I wish I knew more about my Daddy, even though we were close, he didn't really open up about his growing up years ... he passed away last year. I miss him. :(

(((HUGS))) and love, Karla. :(

This write is so true and I know for a fact. My Dad passed away when I was 25, he was a good man, a church goer, a veteran and a good husband but...he was to me always a strong disciplinarin who ruled with a strong hand and few words. He worked night and day and seemed so much older then other kids parents and he never cried...or so I thought. When I wrote my first book it was about him and his war records that I obtained showed a different man than the one I thought was my father. I learned he was frightened and afraid of going to war, I learned things like he wanted to be a truck driver, I read poetry and love letters he wrote home from the war to my mother...so much I didn't know and only learned by accident.

How right you are Carole. I was too busy growing up to pay much attention to who my parents were or my perceived view of them.
